Editorial Reviews

William Beatty
A pioneer in family therapy, Minuchin here combines autobiographical chapters with case histories and joins them with a chapter about the lives of Minuchin and his wife as a couple that not only underlines the breadth of experience in their backgrounds but leads into two case studies of couples. The cases, all derived from tapes, are enlivened by much conversation. Presenting nine couples and families, these studies are of interest not only as individual stories but also as examples of particular problems--e.g., what can happen when the breadwinner retires (the wife remarks that when she took her husband for better or for worse, she did not take him for lunch) and what can happen to a family when a daughter becomes a drug addict. Minuchin stresses relationships and complementarity rather than the individual and the victim. "The basic quest of family therapy," he writes, "is to release unused possibilities." He gets around the problem of always appearing as the all-knowing, error-free therapist by describing moments of doubt and missteps, so that his is a realistic as well as thought-provoking and hopeful book.
