Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Peyton, Eli, Cooper, father Archie, and mother Olivia: The whole Manning clan is here in a family football outing that entertains as it teaches. Young future NFL stars Peyton and Eli learn tips about quarterback sneaks, buttonhooks, and other gridiron plays from Archie, a College Football Hall of Famer in his own right.
Publishers Weekly
This writing team of two Super Bowl–winning quarterbacks and their former star quarterback father should score with young fans, despite some heavy-handed clichés and syrupy dialogue. As the young Manning family prepares to visit two sets of grandparents, mother Olivia announces to her three football-playing sons (oldest brother Cooper is practicing with his brothers), “This weekend is going to be filled with family and football.” Madsen’s (The Adventures of Thor the Thunder God) digitally created art is most successful in delivering dynamic images of the clan, ably conveying the siblings’ abundant energy, and painterly outdoor scenes of autumn foliage; vehicles and buildings are awkwardly stiff and geometric by comparison. The story itself is fairly empty—it’s mainly a vehicle to introduce plays like the quarterback sneak and buttonhook (which are diagrammed on the endpapers) and platitudes like “As long as you look out for each other, you will always be on a winning team.” But readers should pick up some new moves and game ideas for both on and off the field. Ages 4–8. (Sept.)
From The Critics
This is one of those books that got published because of who the family is. The story is about playing football all the time and being good brothers to each other. The brothers are Peyton, Quarterback for the Indiana Colts; Eli, Quarterback for the New York Giants; and Cooper, who played high school and college football. Their dad, Archie Manning, was a star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. There is no mention of why Cooper did not precede his brothers into the pro leagues, but it is probably not a lack of talent. The Manning boys play football whenever possible, including when they go to visit their grandparents, as happens in the book. They do a "Quarterback Sneak" when they are about to head out to see their grandparents, but why they need to sneak is beyond me. They also execute the "Hook and Ladder," "Go Deep" pass, the "Fade Route," the "Buttonhook," and the "Post Pattern." Diagrams of these plays are printed on the end pages. Their mother tells Peyton, Eli, and Cooper to work together and they will always be on the winning team. I was not impressed with this book and did not see its point. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
