Overview

This text is the first ever developed as an undergraduate level textbook for Family Life Education. It introduces the theory, principles, and skills necessary to prepare, present, and evaluate family life education programs and workshops. The text is based on the National Council of Family Relations guidelines for undergraduate education, and integrates theory and applications appropriate for established areas of education such as high schools, educational extension services, and community and youth centers. The scope includes sex education, marriage and family relations, parenting, and youth services.

Recommended textbook for parenting & family fields

I have assigned Powell & Cassidy's book as the required textbook for two courses: an undergraduate class in Family Life Education (University of North Texas) and a graduate class in Teaching Family Sciences (Texas Woman's University). While this text is not a graduate-level textbook, I considered it an essential reading for the graduate course. It is excellent example of how FLE content knowledge should be presented to pre-professional undergraduate students. The book presents practical advice and explanation for working with families. Topics are repeatedly related to the content areas recommended by the National Council on Family Relations. One of the authors, Dawn Cassidy, directs the National Council's program of Certified Family Life Educators. I recommend this book as a textbook for parenting and family professionals and pre-professionals. Mary Bold, Ph.D., CFLE
