Meet the Author

About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn’t it? I’m a storyteller who hears teenager’s voices so loud I have to write them down. I love the idea of sports even though sports hate me. I’ve dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon. But always, always, writing books calls me home.I’ve had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It’s the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands… thank you for reading. As for the rest of it, I’m short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can’t seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and four massive cats.

If you love books that pull you in from page one due to their descriptive nature, you're going to love this book. I was immediately in love with how the author managed to make me feel the emotions and physical feelings of the character from the first scene. This is an awesome young adult paranormal romance that I highly recommend.

I was left floored by how amazing this story was. Endearing storytelling that sucks you in and doesn’t let go, even when it’s over.  I never thought a family of witches could get into so much chaos! A nonstop ride into the depths of the powerful Hayle coven, where things can go haywire in an instant.

I absolutely loved this book. The world building, the characters…all of it was so easy to fall into and love the people like good friends. It follows Sydlynn Hayle, a reluctant teenage witch who’ll do anything to get rid of the magic she’s born into. Her mother is the coven leader and her father is a Demon Lord. Can’t get much farther from normal than that. But all she wants is to be normal, a goal that seems to be slipping from her hands more and more as each day passes. Bullied at school no matter how hard she tries to fit in, she finds empowerment in places and in people she never thought possible.

But someone is out to destroy the Hayle coven and it will ultimately be up to Syd to find out who and why, before it’s too late. Could it be the Moromonds- old friends of Miriam (Syd’s mom) who just rejoined the coven with their oddly magnetic son Quaid? Or is it some unknown magic that threatens them all?

You’ll love the twists and turns, Syd’s snarkiness and stubbornness and oh, the magic of course. It gives us an inside look at how a coven works, a magical family that I’d want to belong to! There are traitors, different magical beings and a world that beckons you in with ease. It’s definitely a world you want to just stay in and follow Syd around. The stuff that happens to this chick are just unforgettable.

I can’t wait to start book 2 of this 20 book series. It’s a definite must read!

    Teen? Demon?? Witch???

Being a teen is often hard enough, you aren’t quite old enough to think, act, make decisions like an adult, yet, you’re too old for that gapped tooth, pink, fluffy cuteness of a child. You also haven’t quite mastered the art of tact, self-assuredness, etc. What’s left for a teen to do? Rebel, of course! But if your mother is a powerful witch coven leader, your father is a “nice” demon, and your uncle is a vampire, and you want to be “normal,” well, it takes teen rebellion to a new level! Everyone scrutinizes your every move, you are a public figure in the world of the supernatural, and it’s probably worse than being a preacher’s child. Sydlynn Hayle tries to act “normal” at school, but she is an outcast, picked on brutally by the “in crowd” and there isn’t a thing she can do about it, because her magic isn’t exactly reliable and besides, it’s against the laws of the coven. Yep, the teen years are tough.

When strange things start happening to the Hayle Coven, or, just about anywhere Sydlynn is, of course, she gets blamed and feels totally misunderstood, even more of an outcast. When the very existence of the coven is threatened, and her family’s lives are at risk, will Sydlynn finally put her rebellious streak to good use? There is dark magic in the air, and no one senses it but Sydlynn, why won’t people believe or trust in her? And at school? Is there a way to turn her misfortune around there? Is there anywhere Sydlynn can feel like she fits in? She has gifts and abilities with far more power than everyone realizes, even her, but will it be enough in the end?
Family Magic by Patti Larsen had me from the first page as her tale unfolded around the Hayle family, snarky Sydlynn in particular. With an array of great characters, including a demon cat with an attitude, my favorite was, by far, Syd. Attitude or not, that girl has a huge heart, one that she seemed to almost try to hide, because she felt so misunderstood. The plot runs in high gear, with great subplots, and a few completely comical scenes, to boot! Worried about teen angst? Don’t, Syd is one tough teen!

I guess you could say I was ‘spellbound’ by Family Magic! Although I already own this book, I did receive a review copy from Story Cartel and the author in exchange for my honest review.

Sydlynn Hayle is a half witch, half demon who just wants to be wholly normal. She's biding her time until her 18th birthday when she can renounce her magic forever and be ordinary. Problem is renouncing her magic probably means cutting ties to her quirky family. And they mean a lot to her. Even if they DO force her to move cities far too often.

So she's in another small town with another batch of cliches like the cheerleader bully. But this time Sydlynn has had enough of it. It's going to be different now.

Throw in two love interests in the form of the coven's newest addition--Quaid--AND the bully's ex-boyfriend--Brad and a huge betrayal, and you have an exciting story.

For me this book got off to a slow start with a little too much emphasis on Sydlynn's angst. But as the story progressed, I read faster and faster, eager to reach the end. I would have given it four stars if there'd been more of a love story (because I LOVE romance).

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Patti pens "Family Magic" the first book in 'The Hayle Coven Series" in a well written plot with vivid descriptions, filled with magick, witches, demons, and drama. With well developed, strong and believable characters that have good chemistry between them, this book will keep you awake turning the pages. I've always loved how Patti takes the time to introduce the characters and the world they live in to her readers, this is something that is very rare. I am truly looking forward to the second book to see what happens and highly recommend this book to all supernatural/paranormal fans.

I really loved this book :) It was easy to be sucked into Syd’s life. High school is a rough enough time without adding witch and demon problems to the mix. She is trying so hard to be her own person on home, but fit in at school. She is an emotional mess, but this is typical for a 16 year old girl. I love how strong she is and that she stands up against bullying. This book is packed with all sorts of things like high school bullies, boys, teen angst, talking cat, vampires, coven, crazy grandma, spells gone awry, and so much more.

I recommend to all paranormal book lovers of YA age or adults. You will not be bored reading this book. And when I looked to see if it is a series, it is and has like 20 books. I’m going to have to read them all!! And I’m going to have to buy them in paperback, so I can have them for my classroom because I think the kids will love them.

This novel is captivating, enthralling, and fast-paced while still remaining a light and very enjoyable read. Larsen’s phenomenal descriptions paint a vivid world for you. They support the very well developed story that this amazing storyteller presents to us. I also enjoy how she meshes the world of witchcraft with the mundane world of mere mortals. This story is developed in such a manner that allows you to see the possibility of it happening right next door.

This novel takes the well-known to-be-a-witch story, and gives it to the audience backwards. Larsen writes a thrillingly captivating tale about accepting who you are. Throughout her very well thought out and solidly put together novel Larsen illustrates how, regardless of who you are or who you think you want to be, life is always best if you are above all, yourself.

Larsen puts together a very interesting cast of characters. There is a large variation in personalities, physical appearances, and walks in life, yet the characters mesh together into a cohesive unit that has at least one person that everyone can relate to. Larsen’s cast of characters is also very well developed. Each one is uniquely developed to fit their role in the story. I also appreciate the varied degree of development found throughout the cast. Larsen doesn’t over or under develop any of her characters. As a reader, you find out what is relevant to the character in question.

As a whole, this was a very captivating novel that I couldn’t put down. I was enthralled throughout and cannot wait to read more about these characters and to dive into further work by this very talented author.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review

    3.5 *'s

Syd is very reluctant to embrace her destiny to be the next leader of her family's coven of witches. She has never felt like magic and everything that goes with it came naturally to her as it should.

This story does not lack for secrets and revelations, but some of them were a bit predictable.

I am very curious to see what happens with the mysterious Quaid. You never can figure out his true motives or intentions. I really think he is who would be great for Syd, if he's one of the good guys.

Sometimes you come across characters in books who just rub you the wrong way. Syd had the potential to be great, but the way she treated her mother and her blatant disregard for those around her at times really made me want to smack her. But even though she definitely had her faults, I still felt myself pulling for her, but hoping she would come to her senses sooner rather than later.

I really liked this story and plan on reading the rest of the series. I have a feeling now that the introduction has been made, it will get even better.

    Awesome Paranormal read
I absolutely loved this book, I can not wait to read book number 2. I don't want to read it in e format only because I read this in paper book, and I would like to continue this story in the same fashion.

Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. Drama, magic, loneliness, crazy family all rolled up into one book it was WONDERFUL.

Family Magic, is about a girl name Syd, who is part of a family that is can do magic, she is part demon part witch. She wants to be independent, a teen girl who wants to be herself pretty much just be a normal teenager. She wants to give up her powers, but gets some news that her family has been hiding from her about her powers. She fights with her mother every day, about trying to be normal.

This book was a great read, and I would recommend it to everyone, as soon as you start reading you are able to dive right into it and continue

To just be normal....oh and to be rid of the coven of witches she belongs to, as soon as possible. Not to much to ask right? Well not if one day you will be the coven leader! Sydlynn Hayle, typical teenager, daughter of the Hayle Coven's leader and a demon from another plane. Fighting for independence, to find herself, to fit in. Headstrong, temper flaring, no one seems to understand her. Syd just wants to be rid of something she didn't ask to be a part of in the first place.
Then things start happening that shouldn't be possible, and the only reason seems to scream traitor! Syd must learn to accept her growing powers in order to save her coven, and family. Add to that dealing with a bunch of holier than thou cheerleaders, the sudden attraction from the star football player, and a group of social misfits who only want to be here friend. High school is hard work! Finding real friends, for the first time in her life, in the least likely of places, the reader sees Syd grow, not only in her magical powers but in her personal life, through out the book.

This being the first book I have read by Patti Larsen, I was very impressed and within just a few chapters, Patti had a new fan. Not only was I so deeply into the story, but I felt like I knew Syd, her thoughts, fears, and insecurities. A great cast of characters, from little sister Meira (who I just adored!), to Gram who made the ultimate sacrifice for her coven, Alison the fallen cheerleader, and dark and mysterious Quaid, just to name a few
Needless to say I was more than excited to find out that not only was the next book in the series already available, but two more after that!
Family Magic is highly recommended, then you better be ready to jump right into book two, Witch Hunt!

    MAGICAL!!

Being a powerful witch as well as the daughter of a demon lord is not exactly the best recipe for being normal in a modern high school. Add two attractive boys and a bunch of vindictive cheerleaders and things can get complicated. Syd, the main character, transforms from being the victimized new kid in high school to an assertive person who accepts her magical powers in order to keep the leadership of the Hayle Coven of Witches from falling into the hands of some truly nasty characters. As we read this story from the main character's point of view, we are right there with her as she rebels against her mother, denies her inherent power and tries to cope with everyday high school politics. The way in which she tells her story is quirky and often funny. Her inner dialogue is downright hilarious at times! I thoroughly enjoyed the numerous versatile characters in this book - a rather special cat, a couple of vampires and a very, very old dog. And let's not forget the variety of witches, a few colorful teenagers and a crazy grandmother who can only be subdued by chocolate and tequila and who has invaluable information and wisdom for her family - during her infrequent moments of lucidity, that is. As this is the first book in the Hayle Coven series, the author takes the necessary time to introduce her readers to the characters and the world they live in. The action, suspense, Syd's teenage dramas and numerous disputes are artfully balanced by lovely moments of family solidarity, a touch of romance and some out-and-out humorous situations. The close relationship between the main character and her not-so-normal little sister is sure to warm your heart. Thus I can safely say that there’s not one dull moment in this story! Although this is a young adult novel, I would strongly recommend it to readers of all ages. I, for one, am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series by a very gifted author.
