Purpose: The manual "presents information on the most common complaints, problems, conditions and diseases encountered by family medicine clinicians....""
Audience: The book is focused on family medicine clinicians and is a tremendous fingertip asset for all in primary care.
Features: The format is somewhat unique in that the sections are divided into "Common Problems," with chapters dedicated to various areas of the body such as the abdomen, arm, and shoulder and to specific problems such as bites and stings, chest pain, and constipation. Another section is dedicated to chronic illness with chapters on asthma, HIV, and acne. The third section covers psychiatric disorders, the next, reproductive health, ending with preventive medicine. Chapters generally use a bullet format with highlighted key points, definitions of common terms, common associated differential diagnoses, and signs, symptoms, and treatments. There are numerous algorithms and full color pictures followed by selected references. The only critique is the very small print which is somewhat necessary because of the volume of information presented. Overall, this is an extremely useful way to present the different topics.
Assessment: As a quick reference for the common diagnoses encountered in the outpatient arena, this is extremely useful. It covers the vast majority of issues very well in an intuitive bullet format while highlighting the most important items.
