Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
The more we understand childhood nutrition, the more central we realize it. Recent studies prove its importance for health, longevity, and emotional well-being, and ever moderate undernutrition has been shown to have lasting effects on school performance. Of course, shaping kids' diets is easy theoretically; in practice, it's often impossible. The Sears spouses have outsmarted enough finicky pre-teens to make their school lunch and afternoon snack regimen seem credible.
Lisa Echenthal
Publishers Weekly
In this vivid and ambitious guide to feeding a family, the Searses, William a doctor and Martha a nurse, shed light on the attributes of food: here brown sugar is "ordinary table sugar made brown by adding molasses," and the blues, reds and purples of fruits and vegetables veil vitamin deposits. Onions and garlic tame the damaging effects of fried oil; meat and vegetables eaten in combination amount to more than the sum of their parts; and cinnamon can masquerade as sugar. A wealth of nutrition information is smoothly presented, complete with accessible scientific explanations, behavior modification tips and framed asides--all organized into minichapters with such titles as "Powerful Proteins" and "The Joy of Soy." The book progresses from an overview of nutrients (water and fiber among them) to an extensive evaluation of food groups, including discussions of vegetarianism, organic foods and decoding packaging labels. Additional sections address weight control and the specific roles various foods play in disease prevention, stamina building, etc. Reference tables and an updated food pyramid will prove indispensable to the reader. FINALLY! The nutrition resource I've been STARVED for!

Another great book from the Dr. Sears series of parenting books, 'The Family Nutrition Book'. I'm sure that nutrition goes a lot more in depth than this book covers, but it goes pretty deep into all the different nutrients, fats, cholesterol, carbs, etc. So far I've only read the first chapter while taking notes (browsed the rest of the book). It goes so far as to explain all the different kinds of fats, which ones are good/bad, which ones you don't need to eat because your body creates it's own, how much of your diet should come from fat (broken into groups for infants, toddlers, children and adults), what foods to eat to get those fats. If the rest of the book goes into as much detail as the fat chapter, for the first time EVER in my life I'll have the EXACT recipe for healthy eating! And I'm so excited! In all my treatment with eating disorders, one thing I'd ask my nutritionists and dieticians for over and over again is a way to know what my diet should be comprised of...and they'd always just give me a 'diet' to follow, but not the science behind it. Now I have it...and I truly am so excited to read this book and be able to apply the science of nutrition to feeding my family. How wonderful to have the tools to know exactly what a body needs to learn and grow and be the best body it can be! I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who's interested in being able to provide the best nutrition possible to themselves and their families!!!! HURRAY!!! For Dr. Sears and his wonderful approach to parenting and ability to write a good book!!!

    Inspired us to change

I got this book hoping it would help me get inspired to eat right. Boy did it ever. I changed so many of my eating habits and so did my Mom and three of my sisters. This is sound nutritional advice and very interesting. Everyone should read this.

Take it from a nutrition neophyte, this book is just wonderful!

Last time I checked, there were still 4 basic food groups! (In other words, I am NOT the most knowledgable girl in town when it comes to nutrition) But listen, this book is so well-written, and so practical and honestly, so fascinating, I've truly changed the way I think about food for our 18-month son and also for my husband and me. Dr. Sears says that after seeing thousands of kids in his practice, he came to the inescapable conclusion that kids who ate well, also had better temperaments, did better in school, were healthier, and the list goes on and on. And this book is (I can barely believe I'm saying this!) a lot of fun to read. Do everyone in your family a favor, buy this book!
