Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In this vivid and ambitious guide to feeding a family, the Searses, William a doctor and Martha a nurse, shed light on the attributes of food: here brown sugar is "ordinary table sugar made brown by adding molasses," and the blues, reds and purples of fruits and vegetables veil vitamin deposits. Onions and garlic tame the damaging effects of fried oil; meat and vegetables eaten in combination amount to more than the sum of their parts; and cinnamon can masquerade as sugar. A wealth of nutrition information is smoothly presented, complete with accessible scientific explanations, behavior modification tips and framed asides--all organized into minichapters with such titles as "Powerful Proteins" and "The Joy of Soy." The book progresses from an overview of nutrients (water and fiber among them) to an extensive evaluation of food groups, including discussions of vegetarianism, organic foods and decoding packaging labels. Additional sections address weight control and the specific roles various foods play in disease prevention, stamina building, etc. Reference tables and an updated food pyramid will prove indispensable to the reader. Practical, Comprehensive Nutrition Made Simple!

This is a most helpful and informative book! I ran across it when I was looking for information on lowering MY high cholesterol. I found what I came for and much more. This book takes you through the body's basics but also explains in simple terms the body's intricate workings on a molecular level. 'The Family Nutrition Book' also gives you understandable information on the hot topics in the health headlines such as healthy vs. unhealthy fats (including clear info on cholesterol), vitamin functions, fiber hows and whys, grains, soy, etc. There is comprehensive coverage of all the food groups and gives the reader good explanations and practical applications for improving their health. All the information is easily applicable with just the basics and, although the authors mention a couple of products they personally enjoy, they stay away from adding quacky, 'you have to buy THIS product to be healthy' information. Information on important health issues and the effects of nutrition on them is also included. 'The Family Nutrition Book' is a great reference book and and easy read. A fantastic book for anyone looking to gain a basic education on good health at any age!
