Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
There are two messages intertwined in this poetic text—every species has its own view of the world, and yet all of these different views are of the same world. Each kind of animal has its own specific home environment and will not come into contact with other animals outside of that world. Despite this seeming isolation, all animals are family members who share different parts of the same world. Schimmel writes—"All these different worlds are the same world. The earth may look different to each of us, but we share only one earth." In these troubled times, there is a comforting message of unity and brotherhood in this book. The acrylic paintings on each page offer a sense of calmness and reassurance. 2001, North Word Press, $14.95. Ages 6 to 12. Reviewer:Carol Lynch

PreS-Gr 3-This title features Schimmel's "eco-surreal" artwork, which suggests the interdependence of all of Earth's creatures. The text attempts to describe the perspectives experienced by a variety of animals. For example, snow leopards don't see the same environment as dolphins. Gorillas call the forest home while lions live on the grassy plains. The point of the narrative is that although all of the creatures live in different habitats, they all inhabit the same planet. Unfortunately, the reiteration of the theme becomes monotonous after several pages. The striking acrylic paintings are minutely detailed and the animals are incredibly realistic, if a bit romanticized. This is a lovely browsing item, but other, less message-driven books on wildlife and conservation might be more useful.-Barbara Buckley, Rockville Centre Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
