Editorial Reviews

Robert E. Rakel
This book consists of 539 tables and 186 figures in 19chapters and an appendix of normal values, calculations, and equations. The chapters are arranged according to body systems, such as skin, eye, respiratory, etc., except for those on family practice, surgicalcare, care of children, and poisoning. The purpose is to provide acollection of clinically useful facts and pearls that are rapidlyretrievable because essentially all of the material is in tables oralgorithms. The authors are experienced and respected familyphysicians (except for one clinical pharmacist who trained in a familypractice program), and their selections are appropriate for the needsof students and physicians in practice. Medical students, familypractice residents, and practicing family physicians are the audiencefor the book. The book will also be useful to residents andpractitioners in other primary care specialties, but because none ofthese are as comprehensive as family practice there will be materialoutside their areas, such as obstetrics, surgery, and the care ofchildren. The appearance is attractive with a glossy, colorphotograph on the cover. The type size is easy to read, but manytables are placed horizontally because of their size. The linedrawings, algorithms, and electrocardiographic tracings are clear andeasy to interpret. This is a useful reference that contains a largeamount of concisely formatted information. The facts are intended to beclinically useful pearls that are practically useful in practice. This objective is accomplished, and this third edition is needed tokeep the material current.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Robert E. Rakel, MD (Baylor College of Medicine)
Description:This book consists of 539 tables and 186 figures in 19 chapters and an appendix of normal values, calculations, and equations. The chapters are arranged according to body systems, such as skin, eye, respiratory, etc., except for those on family practice, surgical care, care of children, and poisoning.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a collection of clinically useful facts and "pearls" that are rapidly retrievable because essentially all of the material is in tables or algorithms. The authors are experienced and respected family physicians (except for one clinical pharmacist who trained in a family practice program), and their selections are appropriate for the needs of students and physicians in practice.
Audience:Medical students, family practice residents, and practicing family physicians are the audience for the book. The book will also be useful to residents and practitioners in other primary care specialties, but because none of these are as comprehensive as family practice there will be material outside their areas, such as obstetrics, surgery, and the care of children.
Features:The appearance is attractive with a glossy, color photograph on the cover. The type size is easy to read, but many tables are placed horizontally because of their size. The line drawings, algorithms, and electrocardiographic tracings are clear and easy to interpret.
Assessment:This is a useful reference that contains a large amount of concisely formatted information. The facts are intended to be clinically useful "pearls" that are practically useful inpractice. This objective is accomplished, and this third edition is needed to keep the material current.
