Biography

"The face of fear I display in my novels is not the pale specter from the sunken grave, nor is it the thing that goes bump in the night," V. C. Andrews once told Douglas E. Winter. "Mine are the deep-seated fears established when we are children, and they never quite go away: the fear of being helpless, the fear of being trapped, the fear of being out of control."

Andrews's novel Flowers in the Attic launched the popular genre sometimes dubbed "children in jeopardy" -- stories about young people abused, lied to, and preyed upon by their evil guardians. The author's own childhood was not nearly so lurid, though it did have an element of tragedy: As a teenager she had a bad fall, which resulted in the development of bone spurs. A botched surgery, combined with arthritis, forced her to use a wheelchair or crutches for the rest of her life.

Andrews lived with her mother and worked as a commercial artist until the 1970s, when she began to write in earnest. Most of her early stories and novels went unpublished (one exception was "I Slept with My Uncle on My Wedding Night," which appeared in a pulp confession magazine). Finally, in 1979, Flowers in the Attic made it into print. The book soared to No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list and was followed by two equally successful sequels, Petals on the Wind and If There Be Thorns. Critics weren't always kind -- a Washington Post reviewer wrote that Flowers in the Attic "may well be the worst book I have ever read" -- but that didn't matter to millions of Andrews's readers, who devoured her gruesome fairy tales as fast as she could pen them.

As E. D. Huntley points out in V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion, Andrews's novels fit neatly into the "female Gothic" tradition, in which an innocent young woman is trapped in an isolated mansion and persecuted by a villain. Andrews's own contribution was to take some of the themes implicit in early Gothic novels -- incest, sexual jealousy, and obsession -- and make them sensationally explicit in her works.

As most of her fans know by now, V. C. Andrews died in 1986, but new V. C. Andrews books keep popping up on the bestseller lists. That's because the Andrews estate hired a ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman, to continue writing books in the late author's style. Andrews's heirs have been cagey about just how much unfinished work she left behind when she died, but testimony during a 1993 tax case suggested that Andrews had only completed a portion of Garden of Shadows, the eighth book (out of more than 50) published under her name.

Still, even if the vast majority of "V. C. Andrews" books weren't actually written by V. C. Andrews, many of her fans are happy to have her tradition carried on. Neiderman has drawn on Andrews's novels, notebooks, and drawings for inspiration. "Don't make this sound weird," he once said in a Washington Post interview, "but sometimes I do feel possessed." To the original V. C. Andrews, who believed in precognition and reincarnation, it probably wouldn't sound weird at all.

Good To Know

Andrews wrote nine novels before Flowers in the Attic, including a science fantasy titled The Gods of the Green Mountain. Later, when she was a bestselling novelist, she wanted to try her hand at different kinds of fiction, but her publisher discouraged her. "I am supposed to stay in this niche, whatever it is, because there is so much money in it," she told Douglas Winter. "I mean, I have tapped a gold mine and they don't want to let go of it. I don't like that, because I want to branch out."

Though V. C. Andrews went by the name Virginia, her birth name was Cleo Virginia Andrews, not Virginia Cleo Andrews. She had planned to publish her books under the name Virginia Andrews, but her first publisher printed Flowers in the Atticas the work of "V. C. Andrews" in hopes that the gender-neutral name would make the book appealing to male readers.

    Another amazing book....

    Another amazing book by VC Andrews! I'm glad I didn't get this first book until now since I only have about a month until the 2nd book comes out. Another fast, read that I didn't want to put down until I was done reading it.

    another great v.c. andrews read

    Great, easy read. I was given the second book in the series so needed to rush out and read this one. It didn't disappoint, as in usual V.C. Andrews style.

    Awful

    This book is so unrealistic. Yes, rich people get away with things, but the situation with Kiera was too much. First she kills Sasha's mom. Does she get punished? No. She then proceeds to treat Sasha like garbage, and neat the end of this book, does really, REALLY mean things to Sasha, including nearly killing Sasha. Is she punished? Again, no. Even in the next book of this series, which is the last one, she still never gets punished. This series is unbelievable and does not reflect the true VC Andrews. The ghostwriter needs to stop writing this garbage, these new books do not hold a candle to the likes of Flowers in the Attic, Heaven, or My Sweet Audrina.

    Entertaining book

    As all true fans know, V.C. Andrews was an American novelist who had the amazing ability to combine Gothic horror stories with family sagas, and turn them into some of the most beloved books in the world of fiction. Almost everyone you ask can remember the Flowers in the Attic series that told the fascinating tale of four children locked in the attic of a wealthy Virginia family by their overzealous, religious grandmother. Unfortunately, in 1986, V.C. Andrews passed away from cancer, leaving a huge hole in the writing world - that no one has yet been able to remotely fill. From that time on, the family hired a ghostwriter to not only continue and finish the books this incredible woman had started, but also to continue with series' in the same "mold." This is the first book in a brand new series that follows the same formula V.C. made popular. Sasha Porter is a fourteen-year-old girl who has seen some truly hideous things. She loves her mother, but her mother has become an alcoholic, jobless, and she and Sasha mainly live on the streets, eating out of garbage cans. Worse? The depression of having her husband walk away and leave she and Sasha in the dust, as well as their horrific situation in life, has caused Mom to go a bit crazy - which is why she walked out into the dark, rainy street that night with her daughter where they were both hit by a car. When Sasha wakes up in the hospital, she finds that her mother is now deceased, and she is on her own. Letting the darkness take her, Sasha is extremely surprised when she next wakes to find herself in a private room, with a private nurse, and a woman by the name of Mrs. Donald March telling her that she would like to adopt Sasha and bring her into her wealthy family to make up for the accident. Turns out, Mrs. March's oldest daughter was the one driving the car, drugged out of her mind, that took Sasha's mother away from her. Taking the March family up on their offer, Sasha soon finds out that the mansion and money are not all they're cracked up to be. Mrs. March lost her youngest child, Alena, to leukemia and seems to want to replace that child with Sasha. Placing her in Alena's room, buying her clothes that Alena loved, making her Alena's favorite meals, etc. Not only is the atmosphere more than a bit freaky inside the tremendous estate, but the older sister, Kiera, who hit Sasha and her mother that night, is a real snooty pain. She hates Sasha, and will make sure Sasha does NOT take her place in the March family. She will do anything to stop that from happening.and, I mean, anything! Family Storms is a fine and entertaining book. It still uses the same 'type' of premise that made V.C. Andrews a star. But readers will always know and see the difference between 'before Andrews' and 'after Andrews.' That woman could write! Quill says: Although her spirit and name are being kept alive, you can't help but miss the original!

    So good

    I have heard VC Andrews books since i was young. I was happy when i saw a new series starting again. I have read everything she has ever written and i would say she did a great job with this one like all her rest. By reading the book you will be engulfed in Sashas life, the character in the book. If you loved all the others then you will love this one as well. I hated to see it end and now i have to wait for the next one to come out............hurry please. Signed cant wait

    Only if a V.C.Andrews fan

    Was not as happy with the book as i usually am with all of V.C.Andrews books,But cant let one slip with out reading it,everyone else has vampire boooks so iguess they gave it a shot.read it fast will probably read sequal ,as always .

    I loved it!

    This book, like most other VC Andrews books, was full of all the juicy drama I love. Sasha, the main character is easy to like and so many times I wanted to speak advice and encouragement to her, like a loving older sister would. Instead, she is caught in the path of her foster sister Kiera, who ironically is way more street-wise than Sasha, despite the fact that Kiera is a spoiled rich girl. It was hard for me to put down once I started reading and I will definately read the next one when it comes out.
