Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Eight classic picture books are reproduced, interspersed with poems, in this diverse yet harmonious keepsake collection. The selections—Curious George and the Firefighters, Lyle Walks the Dogs, Martha Speaks, and others—include their original artwork and share an upbeat, humorous tone. Readers can easily enjoy them in succession or skip around, while such poems as Calef Brown’s “The Egret,” Nickki Grimes’s “Caterpillar,” and Kristine O’Connell George’s “Tree Horse” provide reflective pauses between stories. An audio CD is included. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)
Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
This lovely compilation of eight picture books and eight poems is a collection that seems to naturally go together. With publishing dates from 1939 to 2010, the pictures books are ones that have great appeal to young children featuring largely animal characters in humorous situations. Included are Curious George and the Firefighters, an updated version, Lyle Walks the Dogs, Martha Speaks, The Great Doughnut Parade, Sheep in a Jeep, Tacky the Penguin, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, a retelling and that longtime favorite, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. They are stories whose telling not only appeals to children but the illustrations themselves, while different, have a simplicity and hue in common. The stories range in length making this a book that will last for some time. The short poems are relatively contemporary with a wide range of subject matter from baseball to bugs to the sphinx that include humor as well as wonder. Fortunately, the authors and illustrators are introduced at the end of the book including web sites about additional work. While it is always best when a real person reads to a child, there is a CD included of all the stories and poems. On top of all that, it's a bargain! Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.

PreS-Gr 2—Some of the selections in this varied collection of picture books and poems are well known and loved, such as Susan Meddaugh's Martha Speaks, Eileen Christelow's Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, and Bernard Waber's Lyle Walks the Dogs. With the exception of Virginia Lee Burton's Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (1939), all were published after 1985. The editors chose to include a 2004 "Curious George" story, written in the style of H. A. and Margret Rey, rather than one of the original titles. Nancy Shaw's Sheep in a Jeep, Helen Lester's Tacky the Penguin, and Rebecca Bond's The Great Doughnut Parade round out the anthology. The poetry includes a mix of simple, complex, humorous, and thoughtful selections from Nikki Grimes, Calef Brown, Doug Florian, and Bob Raczka, among others. An audio CD is included, read by a diverse and expressive cast of narrators. Rich sound effects and background music set mood and pace, although there are no chimes to indicate page turns.—Suzanne Myers Harold, Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR
