All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
Ziggy Marley has switched directions for his third solo album, Family Time, but then again, not really. First off, it's a children's album, and a delightful one, and while he has always been an advocate for children's rights he is the founder of U.R.G.E., a nonprofit organization that supports charitable children's causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia, and other parts of the world and has contributed both his voice and songs to various children's programming, this is the first time Marley has done a full children's album. That said, the bright Jamaican rhythms and joyous vocals on display here aren't any different than what he has been doing all along, and children's songs or not,...

That said, the bright Jamaican rhythms and joyous vocals on display here aren't any different than what he has been doing all along, and children's songs or not, this is a wonderful roots release and is far from age-specific. Co-produced by Marley and Don Was, Family Time has a host of guest stars, including Rita Marley Ziggy's mother, Cedella Marley his sister, Judah Marley his daughter, Paul Simon, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals, Elizabeth Mitchell, Laurie Berkner, and Paula Fuga, and the album closes with two stories narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, but even so, this is Marley's show, and his warm vocals make everything else possible. Highlights include the impressive "Cry, Cry, Cry," a fun re-imaging of "This Train," and an it-just-makes-you-smile version of the island traditional "Hold Him Joe," but all of the songs have a like sort of sunny charm. The two stories narrated by Curtis that close things kind of break the musical mood a bit, but that's a minor complaint for an album that is so much fun, so positive, and just so darn delightful.

    Great CD!

This CD has songs the whole family will love! The words are easy to learn and stay with you well after the radio has been turned off.

Loved Family Time so much I bought it for two other friends!

I read about this CD in "Parents" magazine as one of the top picks for 2009; had not even heard of it prior to that. I bought it for my 11-month-old son for Chanukah, and he (and my 3-year-old son) LOVES it! He "asks" me to put it on by walking to where the stereo is, grunting, and dancing his little dance. It's adorable!

The CD itself has a great mix of music, and it's really nice that Ziggy's kids sing on it too. The songs are easy to dance to, and as any parent of little kids will tell you, dancing is big fun around the family room. The messages of the songs are good, wholesome family ones, and I liked it so much I bought copies for 2 friends who have kids who just turned 4. A favorite in our house!

    Great CD

Our little one loves to dance to the music and we as parents could listen to it over and over again without getting sick of it. Great CD.

Ziggy ... what can you expect? Nothing but the best even for non-Reggae fans!

While Ziggy typically is a Reggae singer, the songs in this arrangement were welcomed by all ears. My husband isn't a particular fan of Reggae, but did enjoy it as well. It has a lot of songs that send a across a positive message to both the young and the old. In addition, there are duets, if you will with many famous past and present singers. This adds to the overall value of this CD.

The packaging for the the CD is very creative and I think the price of this CD is worth more than many common CDs today. 2 thumbs up to the creators and artists for the cover and the insert!

    more from this reviewer

Great music for the whole family!

This album was meant for preschool children or a younger audience but once my husband and I heard Ziggy and the many other artists that contributed to this compilation it became an instant favorite. My 15 year old son and 12 year old daughter love it too. From Willie Nelson to Paul Simon you will enjoy the melding of sounds.

    I Also Recommend:

    Parent of toddler and infant

Our whole family enjoys listening to this cd. It is one of our favorites. Our daughter calls Ziggy the "butterfly man" and asks to listen all the time to the songs on this cd. We also like that different artists such as Laurie Berkner sings on this cd. The stories at the end are thought provoking and make a good conversation starter.

Family Time is a CD the whole family can enjoy together. And there are great lessons with the lyrics.

We bought this needing a fresh change in my 5-year-old's music library and have not regretted it. The arrangements are educational and fun to sing and dance to. If you look at the line-up of guest artists, you will get a quick idea of the quality of this CD.
