Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- Brief biographical sketches of 14 Asian Americans, written in a simple style and straightforward manner. The people chosen come from a variety of backgrounds and represent a wide range of professions. With the exception of An Wang, founder of Wang Laboratories, and astronaut Ellison Onizuka, all are living. Wendy Gramm and Daniel Inouye represent careers in government, while Myung-Whun Chung, June Kuramoto, Haing Ngor, I. M. Pei, and Dustin Nguyen represent the arts. From the book world come Maxine Hong Kingston and Jose Aruego. Others include physicist Samuel C. C. Ting, journalist Connie Chung, and tennis star Michael Chang. The information is current and is based on printed sources as well as on interviews. Each chapter is illustrated with three or four black-and-white photographs. The book is informative and inspirational, and explores both the diversity and the contributions of Asian Americans. It should find a space in libraries seeking to enhance their multicultural offerings. --Susan Middleton, LaJolla Country Day School, CA
