Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Working for a company that specializes in studio animals, trainer Chipperton has led a life that has included scouting, raising, and training famous dogs. Writing with Dyball (coauthor, with Christian Siriano, Fierce Style), she explains that training for studio work is different from training pets, and many dogs just don't have what it takes. Yet when Gidget—the star of this book and Taco Bell commercials—was a puppy, Chipperton saw her potential. Gidget, who died in 2009, was a perfect professional and a hard-working dog—with occasional feisty outbreaks, such as biting Antonio Banderas on the nose. Together Chipperton and Gidget traveled to on-location shoots, walked down the red carpet at movie premieres, and met and worked with many celebrities. Chipperton also adopted Moonie, who went on to star in Legally Blonde, as a possible stand-in for Gidget. She includes tales of her work with ducks, cats, rats, and other animals. VERDICT This entertaining glimpse into a fulfilling career for an animal lover is an essential read for dog fanciers.—Lani Smith, Ohlone Coll. Lib., Fremont, CA

This amazing book needs to have people reading and wondering how cute this dog is!

I think this book is amazing and what made this book so
special was that chihuahua it was like a doggy version of beyonce but this dog is adorable and I own a chihuahua myself.

    A really famous dog's life

When I took my copy of A Famous Dog's Life into the exam room at my doctor's in New Mexico, her nurse looked at the cover and asked: Is that the Taco Bell dog? Chihuahuas are everywhere in my neighborhood and I can't tell one from the other.

I'm a little more in tune now, thanks to this book, by Sue Chipperton and Rennie Dyball, which was a good read and an education for me. Chipperton trains dogs-and other animals-for television commercials and movies and the Taco Bell dog, whose real name was Gidget, lived with Chipperton so the story is not only about Gidget's role in commercials and movies, but their life together. Thus, we learn how and where they traveled, how they lived on the road and how Gidget-and other animals trained by Chipperton and friends-met a long list of movie stars, including my favorite Clint Eastwood.

As a freelance photographer, I learned a couple of things that might come in handy should someone ever ask me to shoot a portrait of their dog or cat. It all comes down to associating a desired behavior with a desired sound-and then a treat. That works on me, too.

Chipperton thanks Dyball for "suffering through my edits," and I must commend Dyball, a former student of mine, for maintaining Chipperton's voice throughout. It's the mark of a good editor to let the right voice through, and in this book, the voice is true and consistent.

    Wonderful story

This book will appeal to animal lovers and anyone interested in behind-the-scenes activity in films, television, commercials. The book gave me a new appreciation of the non-human actors on television and in movies. Plus, it is the story of a darling dog who stole so many hearts. I could not put it down!
