Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-Plowden profiles 20 black women, each of whom was the first to establish herself in a given field. Household names, as well as unknown figures from the worlds of sports, politics, the arts, business, and civil and human rights, are included. Constance Baker Motley, Diahann Carroll, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Phillis Wheatley are among the people featured. The women's contributions are related and placed in the context of the time in which they lived and the obstacles they had to overcome. Details of their childhoods, educations, family lives, and aspirations are given. More than just a chronicle of events, the text explores the factors that helped to make these individuals the women they became. A full-page, pen-and-ink sketch accompanies each entry in this serviceable addition to any collection.-Carol Jones Collins, Montclair Kimberley Academy, NJ
