This book presents portraits of fourteen Hispanic (Latino) Americans from varying fields of endeavor: the arts (Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, Lourdes Lopez, Paul Rodriguez), sports (Felipe Alou, Gigi Fernandez), the professions and business (Jaime Escalante, Roberto Goizueta, Carolina Herrera, Antonia Novella), politics (Frederico Pena, Matt Rodriguez, Ileana Ros-Lehitinen), and NASA (Ellen Ocha). Younger adolescents will be stimulated to learn more about Hispanics born abroad or in the United States who have succeeded in the arts, in the U.S. Congress, in police work, in the President's Cabinet, as Surgeon General, as presidents of major U.S. corporations, and as athletes. Each portrait is compelling, with one on mathematics-educator Jaime Escalante particularly so. Multiple photographs accompany each sketch.

Gr 5-9-Biographical profiles of an interesting array of Hispanic Americans from various walks of life. Each 11-14 page entry emphasizes the subject's childhood and steps to success. The individuals themselves or "their designated aides" approved the sketches, which guarantees factual accuracy, but seems to preclude the inclusion of negative material. For example, the authors write, "Baseball and his [Felipe Alou's] nine children from four marriages keep him busy," but they do not explain the dissolution of his first three marriages. In addition to the overly positive narrative, the quality of writing varies among chapters, ranging from average to poor. Many of the chapters, including "Antonia Novello," "Matt Rodriguez," and "Ileana Ros-Lehtinen," contain long paragraphs of seemingly unrelated sentences and misplaced phrases. The chapter on Paul Rodriguez mentions his participation in HBO Comic Relief programs three times. Morey and Dunn have written an interesting and useful collective biography that contains 14 12-to 14-page chapters, each featuring an accomplished American man or woman of Hispanic heritage, from a variety of professions. Included are politicians (Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Federico Pena), scientists and physicians (Antonia Novello, Ellen Ochoa), artists and performers (Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, Carolina Herrera, Lourdes Lopez, Paul Rodriguez), athletes (Gigi Fernandez, Felipe Alou), and others. Illustrated with black-and-white photos, the prose is clear, and the book's format easily lends itself to students' biographical research. Selected bibliography for further reading
