Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Fans of Fancy Nancy know that this lilting, larger-than-life personality has been seeking stardom since the first day of picture book fame. In this spectacular new number, she hopes to come center stage in a glamorous mermaid ball, but the audition doesn't go well and another ballerina wins the title role. Cast embarrassingly as a tree, she demonstrates her aplomb by making the most of her humiliation. An opening night disaster, however, gives her chance to light the stage and steal the spotlight. Could this series be more endearing?

Fancy Nancy at the ballet! Nancy and her best friend Bree are positively thrilled to be in their ballet class production of Deep-Sea Dances. The girls have their hearts set on being mermaids but Nancy's mom wisely reminds them that "being in a ballet is thrilling no matter what part you have." But as readers know, Nancy loves the spotlight and her dramatic flair can send her on all sorts of wild adventures. When she is cast as a tree Nancy is horrified, particularly because her costume will be brown and there "is no way to look fancy in brown." The adults in Nancy's life are adept at encouraging her big personality while keeping her focused and Madame Lucille prompts Nancy to pretend she is a weeping willow tree. Nancy embraces this instruction with her typical gusto. But the challenges are not over yet—when one of the mermaids is injured Madame Lucille casts Bree as her replacement causing Nancy to have some brief pangs of jealousy. Like many children her age, these feelings are not new but Nancy does seem to be handling those sticky situations better. That night, Nancy and her mom discuss white-lies and Nancy learns a bit more about friendship. The next morning she presents Bree with a present—her fanciest shell tiara. Of course, the Deep Sea Dances ballet is a smashing success and Nancy is magnificent as a swooping and swaying weeping willow. Per usual, Robin Preiss Glasser's whimsical illustrations add spunk and energy to this popular character. Another delightful addition by O'Connor to her ever-growing "Fancy Nancy" series. Love the book!

My 6 year daughter loves Fancy Nancy and this book was a hit! It's wonderful to have the read to me feature. She utilized it on a long trip in the car recently when neither her father or I could read to her. I wish the read to me ebooks were not so expensive. I would buy many more if they were a bit cheaper.

**Originally posted on Libby Blog** Full of imagination and glamour!
When Madame Lucille announces that they will be performing a ballet called Deep-sea Dances, Fancy Nancy and Bree can't wait to be the lead mermaids! Unfortunately, they are assigned to be a tree and an oyster. After a lovely tea party where they talk about how wonderful each will be in their parts, Fancy Nancy is disappointed once again when the star mermaid gets injured and Bree is selected to take her place instead of her. As Nancy struggles with jealously and trying to overcome it, we are treated to gorgeous and glamorous outfit after outfit as usual!

My 5-year-old's thoughts: I loved Fancy Nancy and her friend when they played mermaid and her little sister poured water on the top of the lagoon. I liked their little playhouse and loved the Fancy Nancy dresses. And I liked her friend too. It was awesome when she bowed down to the dance teacher and I loved the little peace sign on the other girl's dress. I like the girl with the braids in and the purple suit with a bow in her hair. I loved when they played tea party with the French words. I love it when she swoops and swirls everywhere. I didn't like when the girl sprained her ankle. I also didn't like it when Fancy Nancy's friend got to be the mermaid and not Fancy Nancy. That was kind of mean. I didn't like it when she shoved her costume in behind the closet! I loved the show! And I liked when they hugged at the end. That's all.

My thoughts: This was such a delightful story with Fancy Nancy which not only includes all that you would expect from Nancy but also a great life lesson too! Jealously is such a tough issue for young children and even adults to deal with. After some sound advice from her mother, Fancy Nancy pulls it off gracefully and admiringly. Plus, she does it in true Fancy Nancy style! Wait until you see her on stage in her Weeping Willow costume! WOW!
