Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Fancy Nancy and best friend Bree have formed an exclusive (and glamorous) nature club and set out to learn about the fascinating world of birds, insects, butterflies and leaves. Leaving her lace gloves behind Fancy Nancy provides accurate and essential scientific information (that is fancy for correct) for the youngest nature lover. She explains the difference between insects and spiders, describes the life cycle of the fragile (fancy for they hurt easily) butterfly, examines wild flowers with some very exotic and fancy names, and includes information about bird plumage (fancy for feathers). There are recipes for a Pinecone Bird Feeder and extra fancy Lemonade. For added fun, Nancy throws in a few nature jokes such as "What do you call a 100 year-old ant?" Why an antique (fancy for very old) of course! In addition to Glasser's familiar drawings of the Divine Miss Nancy there are color photos of the insects, birds, and butterflies the girls' research. Fancy Nancy still has plenty of appeal and her foray into the world of science proves there are still lots of new fancy words and facts to learn. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

K-Gr 3—Nancy returns with all of the sophistication, aplomb, and humor she displayed in her previous books. She and her best friend, Bree, have created an exclusive club (they are the sole members) for their nature studies. The Explorers Extraordinaire have official membership certificates, a dress code, and, most importantly, a clubhouse. Their mission is to search for bugs, birds, and leaves in their backyards and record what they find in their notebooks. Back in their clubhouse, the explorers do additional research to learn more about their discoveries. When younger siblings ask to join the club, they are rejected for lack of maturity. After finding a baby bird that has fallen from his nest, the junior explorers are allowed to join. This slim title is packed with a lot of information about nature, but the vocabulary makes it too challenging for beginning readers. That aside, it is one of Nancy's most captivating adventures. The pages overflow with her personality and style. Text and illustrations pull together to show readers what a smart and complex character she is. A sure winner for eager young explorers.—Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME

    Wonderful Story

The characters are fun and believable for a child. The story line is enjoyable and realistic, while the young reader learns true facts about nature and life. Great combination !!

    Fancy girls can be outdoorsy

This was the first Fancy Nancy book my 4 year-old and I read. We loved it and have started adding to the Fancy Nancy collection ever since. In this story Fancy Nancy and her best friend Bree share their experiences and discoveries in the outside world. Of course, Fancy Nancy has to accessorize herself and everything she uses which adds to the fun for little girls. The story teaches about insects, birds and plants, as well as teaching a healthy respect for them which I like very much. And, of course, they have a fancy club house to have meetings and to read up on their discoveries.

Much lengthier read than the average Fancy Nancy

I think this book is a bit more advanced than the first few Fancy Nancy series books. It is a lot more technical in terms of insects and nature. My daughter loves it but it is not one that you want to read again and again each night. It is pretty educational and probably better for a 5 or 6 year old on up.

No read to me option in nook kids app for this book

I was disappointed that this nook kids book does not have the option to read to me as my five year old likes to have that available to her. It makes her feel more independent. Otherwise the book itself is great as with all Fancy Nancy books.

    Fancy Nancy 'Explorer Extraordinare' Review

Fancy Nancy wants to explore with her best friend Bree. She finds all sorts of cool and intresting things. She also wants to explore with her sister and Bree's brother, so she teaches them the rules. Soon, they forget! They pick some flowers and that was a rule not to do. They are in big trouble, but will Nancy and Bree forgive them? Find out in this great book.

    Fun and Factual!

I love the Fancy Nancy series. This one teaches about ants, spiders, butterflies, moths, ladybugs, birds, and leaves. It even has an easy-to-make bird feeder!

    We enjoyed Fancy Nancy

I purchased Fancy Nancy Explorer for a 5 year old. She enjoyed the book when I read it to her and has asked me to read it over and over again. Nancy and her friend Bree explore their own back yards and the neighbors and they explain some things that they find. I like how Nancy will tell the definition of a word that she uses for the children who are reading or listening to her books. I also like how Nancy is explaining about nature to the readers. I don't know if I knew anything about birds, bugs, trees and flowers when I was five but it is something that I think is helpful to know. The book promotes family bonding because it always has Nancy's sister and her parents interacting with her. In this book in the end Nancy allows her little sister and her friends little brother to join their Explorer Extraordinaire Club.

    Another fun Nancy book!

I purchase the books for our local library, and I cannot keep the Fancy Nancy books on the shelves! They are checked out as soon as they are displayed on the bookcase. A very popular series of books! The illustrations just as much fun as the text. You can't go wrong with giving any one of these titles as a gift; I don't know of any young lady who doesn't enjoy a Fancy Nancy book.

My daughter is 7 and loves Fancy Nancy

We just bought this book for my 7 year old for Christmas, who happens to still like Fancy Nancy. The illustrations in the book are fantastic, such as humming birds, butterflies, and wild flowers.

I would definately not repurchase this book

This book was ok. My little one was very bored. There just wasn't much of anything to it. I think she would have appreciated this book more when she was 2 and she generally loves Fancy Nancy books.

This book starts about very disappointing incomparison to the previous books in the series.

As the book progresses, it becomes more of a science learning experience than the other books. Overall, my daughter and I liked it, but not loved ity.
