Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Following in the footsteps of her beloved Nancy Drew, Fancy Nancy attires herself in a style-setting pink trench coat and sunglasses and sets off with her partner in crime-fighting Bree to solve a batch of unsolved mysteries. Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth contains a fetching mix of whimsy, Fancy Nancy earnestness, and pleasing brain-teasing puzzles. A failsafe chapter book choice for clue-hunting girls and boys alike.

Publishers Weekly
Fancy Nancy pirouettes into middle-grade territory with the launch of a mystery series that has her emulating another famous Nancy—Nancy Drew. The stylish sleuth assumes the role with élan, dressed for the job in a pink trench coat and sunglasses, carrying a rhinestone-studded magnifying glass. Initially frustrated by the lack of cases to crack (“I wish we lived someplace like River Heights,” she complains. “In River Heights, criminals are lurking around every corner”), Nancy springs into action when her teacher’s prized blue marble goes missing. Nancy shows both her trademark flair for translating (“Ooh la la! Nancy felt all tingly just saying the word ‘motive.’ It meant the reason for doing something bad”) and her penchant for humorous exaggeration. As in Nancy’s earlier picture books and I Can Read titles, her affectionate interactions with her younger sister, JoJo, and their parents ground the story. O’Connor and Glasser are as in synch as ever, and readers who have grown up with Fancy Nancy will be thrilled to follow her new career path. Ages 7–10. (Apr.)
Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
Fancy Nancy takes up detective work in this early chapter book featuring the popular picture book character. When Nancy and her best friend, Bree, overhear neighbors Wanda and Rhonda arguing about a secret, the case is afoot. Rhonda is clearly keeping something from Nancy, but attempts at drawing a confession fail, despite Nancy's excellent interrogation skills. Meanwhile, at school, a marble belonging to Nancy's teacher disappears during Family Day. Could someone have stolen it? Though everyone is a suspect, Nancy and Bree struggle to believe any of their classmates could be a thief. After a scattering of red herrings, Nancy follows a plausible trail of clues to resolve both mysteries, and learns about forgiveness and judging others along the way. Nancy and Bree embrace all the trappings of good detectives, from communicating via code to wearing (fancy) trench coats, and even using fingerprints and photo evidence to solve the two cases. Nancy's love of official sleuth vocabulary, like "motive" and "observant," creates plenty of opportunities for introducing and defining new words. Secondary characters, from classmates to parents, are adequately lifelike, and O'Connor's depiction of classroom and sibling dynamics rings true. Young readers will have no trouble following the clues, and particularly astute mystery fans may even be able to solve the crimes themselves. At just over one hundred pages, with a larger type and Glasser's black and white illustrations spread throughout, this title is ideal for fans of the "Fancy Nancy" series and other aspiring Nancy Drews who are reading independently but not yet ready for longer chapter books. Kirkus Reviews
Fancy Nancy is back, this time in a chapter book. Nancy Clancy loves fancy words here as much as she does in her popular picture-book series. Her interests are changing, though, as she grows up. An avid Nancy Drew fan, she and best friend Bree have a new Sleuth Headquarters and are excited to solve their first case. When their teacher's special blue marble disappears, everyone in the class becomes a suspect. Their targets of suspicion change from moment to moment, leading the new detectives on a number of wild goose chases. When the real criminal is uncovered, the girls are forced to examine their assumptions. Fans of the Fancy Nancy series will enjoy reading about an old friend in a new, more grown-up setting. Fully fleshed-out secondary characters, especially Nancy's parents and Mr. Dudeny, Nancy's teacher, create a nice backdrop for this new series aimed at transitioning readers. It's hard to write mysteries for a chapter-book audience, but O'Connor creates a plot with subtle clues and red herrings that allow readers to puzzle out the mystery along with Nancy. Nancy's love of colorful language makes it fun to discover new vocabulary (motive, accessory, obstinate) while solving a dandy mystery. Glasser's frequent black-and-white illustrations will help connect this new series with the earlier one. Nancy is one sassy gumshoe. Her fans will enjoy growing up with her. (Mystery. 7-10)

This is wonderful! My 5 year old was thrilled that Fancy Nancy went on in chapter books, now that she's graduating from the "I Can Read" series of books, and I'm thrilled that the books are mysteries, which my daughter and I share a love of. I hope to transition from these to Nancy Drew in time, and I dearly hope this series continues.

Wow, was I so excited to see a chapter book about Fancy Nancy! My 5.5 year old has loved Fancy Nancy for years - now that she can read the Level 1 & Level 2 type books on her own, I'd missed reading about Nancy. A chapter book was a great progression for my daughter and I. We couldn't put it down and were happy to see "book 1" in the upper corner of the cover - eagerly awaiting more!

My daughter was the biggest fan of the Fancy Nancy series and has even met the author, Jane O'Connor and the illustrator, Robin Preiss Glasser. You can imagine our excitement to find that there is now a chapter series starring our favorite Posh gal!! We bought the book and she has already read it 3 times. I certainly hope that we do not have a long wait for following books in this series!

    Wonderful

This book is wonderful. It might be above my age limit but, once I read the first chapter, my eyes were glued to the page. The word choices were magnificate and were very strong. I am going to use these words in my vocabulary. This book also made me think twice. I WANT TO BECOME A DETECTIVE? I strongly hope you enjoy the book.
