Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Margo, an octopus, and Claire, a dolphin, are best friends. They go to movies, play games and have sleepovers. When a Fashion Show is advertised, Claire wants to participate. Margo is hesitant because she has a tendency to squirt her black ink when she is nervous and she is afraid of embarrassing herself. Claire finally talks Margo into going. Fish of many colors and species are swimming around in fancy dresses. Claire traverses the Shell Walk beautifully, but when Margo's turn arrives, she squirts ink on the platform. Ms. Dotty, the starfish fashion expert, tells Margo to take off the dress and adorns her many arms with jewelry. Margo is truly fancy. The various fish exhibit human characteristics and expressions in the colorful illustrations. Fans of Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoons will find the undersea setting familiar. Octopus facts are given on the first page, although none of them apply to the story. Intended as a beginning read alone book, suggestions for parents and caregivers are included. "Stone Arch Readers" series, Level 3. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

Meet the Author

Cari Meister has written more than a hundred books for children, including the "Tiny" series (Penguin) and the "Meet the Monsters" series (Stone Arch Books). She has received many awards for her books. Most recently, "Airplane Adventure" (Stone Arch Books), was named to "Parents" magazine Best Books for 2010. Cari has been fascinated by the night sky ever since she can remember. Her love of space and stars led her to Space Camp when she was growing up. Today, Cari lives in the mountains of Colorado, with her husband, four boys, two horses and one dog.

Steve Harpster has loved to draw funny cartoons, mean monsters, and goofy gadgets since he was able to pick up a pencil. In first grade, he avoided writing assignments by working on the pictures for stories instead. Steve was able to land a job drawing funny pictures for books, and that's really what he's best at. Steve lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wonderful wife, Karen, and their sheepdog, Doodle.
