Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The Fandex Family Field Guides series introduces the presidents' wives in First Ladies, with 50 die-cut cards joined by a pin that allows the cards to fan out. Featuring such fascinating subjects as Abigail Adams, who according to Harry Truman "would have made a better president than her husband"; Eleanor Roosevelt, who was known as "the First Lady of the World"; and Jackie Kennedy, who "captivated the public" with her dignity and sophistication (and whose portrait serves as the "cover"), each card features a full-color illustration of the First Lady and facts about her life. This "Fandex" offers "Knowledge at your fingertips" for the entire family. The fan consists of cards approximately 10" by 3" that are anchored by one pivotal point. Each card contains a picture of and information about a first lady of the U.S. Specific information consists of the lady's complete name, the dates of her life, name of her presidential spouse, and dates of her "first lady" term. An introductory fan piece reveals that no one knew what to call the wife of the president until President Hayes took office. At that time the term "first lady" was coined and came to be defined as the lady who presides over banquets and establishes a cause during her husband's time in office. The text features facts of what happened during her husband's term and facts about her contributions to the presidency. In addition, each card possesses two relevant pictures from the time period. This set up offers readers the opportunity to find information quickly. It is well suited for classroom research. A student in charge of the fandex could easily quiz others about the information. Middle grade readers on up will glean interesting tidbits from this fandex. The only drawback may be the packaging itself. The fandex comes in a box with a plastic top. Once opened, the plastic top does not work well as a permanent cover. 2003, Workman Publishing, Ages 10 to Adult.
