Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
Aimed at a special-interest adult audience, this work covers feature-length films available in English and released before May_ 1991. The authors are film enthusiasts by avocation, and the selections for their comprehensive listing of the cinema of the fantastic are those films from the "overlapping genres of horror, science fiction, and fantasy." Thus, comedies like "Topper" are excluded, and "only those ghost films with at least some brief element of horror or suspense are included. The annotated survey of films is arranged by more than 100 subject headings, including such topics as "Bats", "Fish-People", "Mad Scientists", and "Time Travel". At the beginning of each section is a brief introduction that discusses history, highlights, and trends. Some of the subject headings have several subdivisions, others are cross-referenced, and all are listed in the alphabetically arranged table of contents. Each entry contains information about the film production, the cast, and a plot synopsis. Some entries include a quotation from or about the film. For some films, trivia and gossip are included as "additional information," which the authors admit may not always be accurate. Titles that are entered under several subject headings contain different summaries for each entry, emphasizing the relationship to the specific genre. The information is clearly laid out on the page, but pages are cramped with double columns, single spacing, and small print. Stills from several of the films fare better in reproduction, and fantastic-film buffs--the book's intended audience--will enjoy them The book has appendixes that list 3-D films, films with a western setting, and films with black casts aimed at a black audience. The title index contains so much information that entries can be confusing. In addition to the page-number listing for each film, it indicates year of release and cross-references for applicable alternative titles. The index also includes, for 1,908 of the films, a critical rating from 1 to 10, based on the authors' opinion While this work has the disadvantages of any compendium that draws upon the knowledge and preferences of enthusiasts, it presents substantial filmographic information, useful genre listings, and the opinions of these hobbyists. "Fantastic Cinema Subject Guide" is a useful source for those looking for this highly specialized information.
