Overview

The day-to-day business of growing and harvesting crops for food is brought to dramatic life in this Nebraska Children's Agriculture Book of the Year as children see farmers and their machinery hard at work. Farmers lifted and hauled, cut and chopped, plowed and planted, waters and mowed by hand or with horses and simple equipment—until the first tractor appeared. Now there are tractors with eight wheels and tires big enough to stand in, skid steers with buckets for lifting, and sprayers that look like huge prehistoric birds, as well as many other modern computerized farming machines. Here's a look at farm machinery in the modern age.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Written by an award-winning farmer and children's author, this colorful picture book introduces young readers to the large machines necessary to operate a modern farm. This is farming on a grand scale, a scale that produces many of the food products we ingest daily. The excellent color photos provide a perspective on the enormity that farming has become today, while personalizing it with family members as they assist in the daily process. Machines such as chisel plows, grain drills, choppers, and combines and their uses will soon become common vocabulary after reading this interesting book. A few black-and-white period photos of the author's grandfather and his farming machines are included for contrast. 2006, Boyds Mills Press, Ages 5 to 7.

K-Gr 3-Peterson gives readers an accurate firsthand view of modern, often computerized equipment used on today's farms. Her easy-to-understand text describes both the machines and their functions. She also gives readers insight into why she loves running a 500-cow dairy farm in Wisconsin. "Everyone in our family loves to plow because the earth smells so good and we can imagine the crops growing as we work." Cutting hay is another favorite job because "the alfalfa and clover blossoms smell heavenly." The short, informative paragraphs are surrounded by excellent color photographs that extend the text. The pictures, both large and small, include close-ups and distance shots that show the size and function of the machines. Children who love tractors and other big machines will think this book is fantastic.-Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
