Like the rest of the world, I am trying to watch sugar and carbs. So I have been on a quest for a low-carb, low-sugar cookbook to help me out. Here is what I found: A lot of low-carb books are low-carb but very high fat - aka Atkins style. The other low-sugar books are either full of other 'natural' sweeteners - like honey - or the recipes are not very tasty. And last, there was the South Beach Cookbook that I found to have pretty nice recipes (albeit poor desserts), if you are willing to buy expensive ingredients and cook for hours. THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL - great recipes that are straightforward and easy to make that are low not only in sugar and carbs, but in fat and calories as well. Beyond that the style is engaging and fun to read, with lots of good information on everything from tips on how to work with splenda to nutrition info and great healthy cooking techniques. (Has WW points and diabetes exchanges if those help you as well) BEST OF ALL are the great everyday recipes - Chai Tea, Three Bean Salad, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Coleslaw and a to die for Key Lime Pie - have all been nothing short of terrific (and no one could tell they were low in anything!) I am definitely recommending it to all my friends.
This book contains recipes not only low in sugar, but also low in fat - hard to find with many low-carb cookbooks. Best of all, the recipes actually taste good! I made the Smores snack cake for our kids (ages 13 & 15) and they loved it! Even though it only had Splenda Granular and maybe two teaspoons of brown sugar for the whole cake! I've made many of the recipes, which are moist, sweet and creative without all the added calories. We've all had many of the recipes, but these are without the sugar, i.e. pineapple upside down cake, Chai-type tea, berry crisp. She gives great tips throughout the book and is a delight to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children who are picky eaters AND for adults trying to watch calories and lower their sugar and fat intake but still want to enjoy tradtionally sugar-laden foods.
I love this book! It is the first one I have found to have recipes that are low in both sugar AND fat that truly taste delicious. The recipes I have made - Breakfast Cheesecake, Three Bean Salad and Sweet and Sour Chicken were all easy to make, with clear instructions and easy to find ingredients. I love her engaging writing style along with tips and hints for splenda - as a few of my own 'experiments' in substituting it for sugar did not work out well - and now I know why. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to cut sugar, carbs or fat - this one healthfully and tastefully does it all!
