Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
This encyclopedia of the fantasy kingdom of New Perigord is filled with information about the inhabitants and their tools. The book literally opens to a double-page spread of an elaborate door that folds out to reveal a colorful map highlighting the places and creatures of the realm. The encyclopedia itself is divided into three sections. Part I features the human inhabitants such as Paladins, Fighters, Clerics, and Mages. Part II focuses on the non-human inhabitants including Elves, Fairies, Dwarves, Rogues, and Minotaurs. Part III includes the dark creatures that inhabit New Perigord such as Vampires, Ghouls, Hobgoblins, and Fell Creatures or dangerous animals. Each section features intricately detailed drawings of swords, daggers, and other weapons. Types of armor and tools of each trade are beautifully illustrated. While color is used throughout most of the volume, the dark creatures are illustrated in shades of gray. Readers are given easy-to-read sections on the history and lifestyle of each species. This is a volume to be perused in small sections rather than to be read cover-to-cover. The beautiful illustrations, intricate details, and informative prose will fascinate young lovers of fantasy, both literary and gaming. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
