There are many picture books about kids' perennial desire to run away when the going gets tough, but this one has a good twist.
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Our young pig hero, angry at his mother, declares his determination to leave, right away and go "far away from here." As his mother goes through her daily activities, he gets on his bike. She reminds him that he will need a light and his helmet, a tent and sleeping bag, a coat, and of course his blanky and his dog Chester, and how can he forget his cat and fish or his favorite toys? When his mother suggests a piece of the cake she has baked, as she ices it, our little hero decides that he has everything he needs right there. "I'm not going anywhere." The visual story begins on the title page with the first of a series of vignettes of mother and child in the supermarket, as he angers her with his fooling around, and she reprimands him, which sets his plan into motion. The characters are simply designed with pencil and watercolors in minimal settings, and the familiar emotions are clear in the actions. The imagined scenes of the hero pedaling his increasingly overloaded bike make a fine contrast to the making and icing of the cake as part of the feeling of "no place like home." K-Gr 2—When a piglet decides to run away, his unflappable mother tells him he might need a light, a bike helmet, a tent, and a variety of other items, prompting him to decide to bring toys and pets as well. But when Mom suggests cake, which isn't ready, he chooses not to go after all: "I have everything I need right here." The story is written entirely in dialogue, with the mother's voice indicated by italics. While the child's voice is authentic, the reason he's running away is only vaguely hinted at through spot illustrations on the title, copyright, and dedication pages, and his turnaround, though fitting, is abrupt. The minimal text, containing mostly one- or two-syllable words, makes this picture book an effective beginning reader. The childlike cartoon artwork, rendered in watercolor and pencil, depicts elongated figures with dot eyes that migrate to one side of their heads when appearing in profile. The varied layouts, including full-bleed spreads and lots of spot art on white backgrounds, give the story motion and interest. However, the simplicity of the art belies the sophisticated dialogue.—Amy Lilien-Harper, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT
Kirkus Reviews
A piglet's plan to run away gives the familiar home/away/home theme new meaning. After throwing a tantrum in the grocery store, a little pig announces he's running away from home. His mother calmly mixes a cake and queries where he's going and how he'll get there. The little pig defiantly shouts he's going "far far away" on his bike. His mother omnisciently suggests he'll need a bike light and helmet as well as tent, sleeping bag and warm coat. As her litany of the pets and toys he'll want to take grows, the little pig realizes he has everything he needs at home. Pencil-and-watercolor illustrations rely on basic shapes and pale tones to zero in on the little pig's emotional states as he runs the gamut from mad to mellow. Hilarious scenes of the little pig with his very porcine snout and corkscrew tail anthropomorphically riding in a grocery cart, astride a bike, tucked in a sleeping bag and dwarfed by a parka add layers of humor and charm to this otherwise simple story.
