Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Mountainous Mars—a dusty reddish desert with the tallest volcano in our solar system—is one of the planets explored in this "Far-Out Guide to the Solar System" series, offering a multitude of facts to report-writers, focusing on what astronomers know and the many perplexing questions still to be answered. Young researchers will learn that cold, airless Mars (named for the Roman god of war) is smaller than Earth and has underground ice (a watery past?) and many bowl-shaped craters. Two rovers have studied Mars rocks, discovered powdered silica, and sent back fascinating photos of weather and skies. In one of the boxed "Far-Out Facts" scattered through the text, readers discover that these rovers, designed to function just ninety days, were able (through software upgrades) to explore for six years! Three pages of Fast Facts add more information; for example, Mars has two small moons called Phobos and Deimos, probably once asteroids. A "Mars Timeline of Exploration and Discovery" introduces a section about the many space missions that have taken a closer look at Mars. In 2008, robotic lander Phoenix found arctic ice and soil with minerals, making scientists believe Mars was once warmer and wetter. Illustrations are photos (color when possible) and computer-generated drawings; one shows a projected rover using a laser to analyze Martian rocks. What is next for Mars? Engineers are planning a car-sized rover called Curiosity to explore a warmer part of Mars and a possible Russian landing on Phobos in 2012; NASA envisions sending astronauts to Mars, perhaps by 2050. The big question remains: "Was there once life on Mars?" Included are a helpful glossary and a list of books and websites about Mars explorations, planet-watching, and the solar system. Pebblebird's tail flicked. When he walked away, she micmicked, "treat your elders with respect. Blah blah blah," under her breath, fixing Lilywolf, Goldenstar, and Velvetstar with a deep ocean blue gaze. "Hmf."

Goldenstar smiles as Lilywolf suggests they head towards the clearing, almost voicing his worry for her leg but deciding agsinst it. He knows his wounds aren't much better than hers but hw has no intention of spending the day laying around with Velvetstar here. "Everyone's going to want to meet you," he purrs as they head out, "Either they know you or we talk about you so much they minds well have known you." ~Goldenstar

    Crystalpaw to Everyone!

I'm so sorry l did not rely sooner. There's (about to be) a post at main camp that is VERY important. And explains a lot.)) I nodded, not seeing her kits yet. "Okay," l say and gently wrap Lilywolf's wounds and cover them in herbs. (Forget which were mentioned. I'm deprived of sleep right now :/ ) *fast forward to next day* l awake to Lilwolf screaming and look around. I didn't see anything yet, but went to look at Golden's wounds, having fallen asleep before knowing. I cover everything with burdock root and then cobwebs, tight enough to clot the blood but not mess with circulation.

    |Lilywolf to Horseclan - The Medicine Den|

At the edge of the clearing and behind the form of the lodgepole pine, a thick swathe of grass grows. The tall plants conceal a scattered assortment of boulders. Oddly some have tiny grooves and holes worn into them from the erosion of wind blowing grit against stone. These small structures would provide a sheltered place to store herbs and moss grows in plentiful supply on the boulders' sides. The two largest boulders lean against each other, creating a small space between them that is somewhat protected from the elements. There is only room for a small group of cats to stay here but the rocks certainly provide better shelter than the grass alone. With the addition of nests it is a rather cozy place. It is here that the medicine cats of Horseclan will fight against sickness, heal wounds, and save many of their clanmates. With their skill and connection to Starclan, the medicine cats will help ensure their clan's future for moons to come. ~ The Medicine Den, Lilywolf

    Lilywolf to Everyone!

(Haha it's fun for me Stormy! I get ideas in my head and then they just flow out! I figure if it's not detailed then what's the point! :P Glad you like them!

And sure thing Riv! See before the cats journeyed to Yellowstone Goldenstar was captured by twolegs (ya Lilywolf didn't take that too well). While stuck in a city far away Goldy met Bailey, a kittypet. The twoleg was trying to breed them. O.O Moving on! Eventually Bailey helped Goldy escape but she had a grudge against him since he had fended off her charms and insisted on staying loyal to Lilywolf. So as they journeyed to find the clans, she kept trying to win him over. When they reached Yellowstone, Goldenstar was hurt by a monster so Bailey was the first to explore. She met Lilywolf, who Goldy had told her about, and lied to her in an attempt to keep Lily away from Goldy. She still wanted to steal Goldy and somehow make him her mate. It was kinda a "I can't have it so I want it even more" thing. Bailey claimed Goldenstar had moved on, that they had a kit, and that Goldenstar didn't want to see Lilywolf. Normally Lily wouldn't believe such a thing but she had had nightmares every day on the journey (except the one time Velvet visited) that predicted the exact same thing. Naturally she was crushed and when Goldenstar finally found Lilywolf, it was a rather heart breaking reunion. They managed to clear things up though it still hasn't been made right between the pair. Bailey realized what happened and went into hiding, waiting to somehow get rid of Lilywolf. One day an eagle came and took Goldenstar. Lilywolf tried to save him and that's how she broke her leg. The eagle flew to Rainclan territory and would have killed Goldy but Bailey was there and managed drag him off. However instead of taking him back home for treatment she kept him to herself in a cave. Meanwhile Lilywolf had gone after the eagle and soon found the cave. Bailey almost let her die when she slipped as she was climbing up the ledge but Goldy naturally saved her. Once they had both healed enough the pair had Goldy play dead at the bottom of the cliff and with Lilywolf's furious acting, Bailey was sent fleeing for her life. Lol then they came back here and now Velvetstar is coming back from Starclan for a visit! Phew! And that's the summery of what's been happening! :P

Now the trio will be heading for the camp clearing with Stormy!)

The light gray tabby avoids Goldenstar's gaze, her fur prickling slightly. But when he turns his attention back to Velvetstar she brightens up again and purrs at Velvetstar's comment. "Well we wouldn't have it any other way!" Brushing her pelt against her best friend, the shecat turns as Stormy offers to led them out to the clearing. "That would be great! Thank you Stormy." She purrs, carefully avoiding stepping on the kits as they play. "Come on you guys! Velvetstar it's about time you were reintroduced to Horseclan!" Waiting for the two other leaders to follow her, Lilywolf trots beside them, excitment coursing through her. She couldn't wait to introduce Velvetstar to evryone. Casting a last glance back at the kits, she calls, "Don't you get under Flowernose, Flightpath, or Crystalpaw' s paws! And stay out of their herb supply unless you want to spend extra time in the nursery!" Whiskers twitching with amusement, the tabby happily heads out into the clearing with Velvetstar and Goldenstar. ~ Lilywolf &hearts
