A Good Place to Start. Lots of information in less than 300 pages. Discusses not only the mechanics of migration but the financial crises and social trends leading to migration, settlement and annexation of territories. Includes the Santa Fe Trail, early westward migrations to California and Oregon, settlement of the Salt Lake City area, the Gold Rushes, and more.
