"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider. " —Buck BrannamanIn THE FARAWAY HORSES, Brannaman shares his methods for training and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Robert Redford's movie The Horse Whisperer, for which he was the technical advisor. *Authoratative figure in horsemanship*Reveals the key to understanding animalsBUCK BRANNAMAN is a horse gentler—not a horse "breaker"—who has started more than 10,000 young horses in his clinics. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Buck Brannaman is part of a lineage of skilled horsemen, and for the horses he works with, it is about trust and understanding, not submission." —Robert Redford

"Some books are read for their lyricism and literary merit, while books like Brannaman's autobiography are often read more for the insights of a remarkable life. Equal parts life history and specifics of dealing with challenging horses, Brannaman's wisdom is not just suited to horse lovers, but will resonate for anyone who wants to live more harmoniously." —BIG SKY JOURNAL"Brannaman is insightful enough to understand what he's learned from horses, mature enough to apply what he's learned, and articulate enough to pass those thoughts along simply and directly. There's really no need for literary gymnastics. Instead, this is one of those books that stays quietly with you." —DENVER POST"An engaging read. At Heart, The Faraway Horses is a rich and rewarding autobiography that offers a prescription for living a positive and harmonious life - with horses or even without them." —COWBOYS & INDIANS magazine"This autobiography of a cowboy who's a gentler, not a breaker, is a happy mix of eye-opening instruction and inspiration." —TRUE WEST magazine"This book is written in a straightforward style that keeps the reader wanting to learn more. Readers will enjoy the poignant life of one of America's top cowboys. It is nice to know that the horse has an advocate like Buck Brannaman." — HORSE CONNECTION magazine

If you're looking for a 'horse-training guide', this isn't it. But if you're looking for some guidance, this is amazing. Buck has an amazing insight into not only the horse, but people as well. You may not learn to break a horse, but you will learn to understand him a little better. The insight in invaluable both in horse and human relationships.

This is a great book that everyone should read, unless you live in a cave. Buck is great teacher of horsemanship, but it's not just about horses...it's about life. Buck shares his life's lessons. You'll laugh and you'll cry. You may even want to come see him at a clinic. He's a very special person and a great helper of the horses. Enjoy!

If you're a horse person, you have to read this book! It's not exactly the same as the movie, it has some similar stories, but more added to them, and several that aren't in the movie. Very touching and interesting book. Use the Lend Me feature to share it with your friends!

I give Buck 5 stars on this. Buck writes just like he talks. It's just simple, to the point, with a little humour sprinkled throughout. Here's a guy who came from some humble and pretty rough conditions, He used those, not as an excuse but a reason, to make something of himself and then share that with the rest of us. His passion for what he does is obvious. It is an honest and very open account of the hardships and sacrifices he has made for 'The Faraway Horses'.

If you liked the movie ,Buck, you will enjoy the book. It is basically the story of the book. You get more depth into his life's story ,and some great bits of wisdom. Not a book about how to train horses ,but a story about how training horses connects to how you live your life.

Wonderfully told, a "risen from the ashes" sort of tale. Amazing horseman, and an even bigger man.

Even if you don't know a thing about horses this book will help you just to learn how to deal with people. Buck is compassionate, wise and humorous. There's no one like him. Thank God for the horse's sakes and the lovers of horses he's around.

I was fortunate enough to get one of the first copies in WV, and read it cover to cover in one sitting (worth losing sleep to finish it!) This is not your average horse training book, its Buck's life history and how he relates his life with the horse. You will laugh and cry several times before you finish, but you will also meet an incredible human being who has spent a lifetime working to help the horse and the human find a better way.

Throughout the years there have been many arguments and claims to the title " Horse Whisperer". This man has truly earned it and is one of the pioneers in natural horsemanship. It would be awesome if everyone looked at horses in the same light as Buck.
