Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Lithgow Palooza Readers" are a new series of leveled nonfiction. In this one, the various forms of music are introduced—opera, gospel, jazz, ragtime, rap and more. After a simple one-page illustration and facing descriptions, there is a Farkle fact at the bottom of the text page. It is unfortunate that the opera page illustrations feature an oversized Wagnerian-looking singer rather than something that might be more appealing to kids. The closing pages have a vocabulary section and a series of questions about the text to stimulate thinking and discussion. This is a level four book targeted to independent readers—its characteristics are no repetition, more complex vocabulary, and challenging sentence structure.
