Farm Animals

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There is much more text than one may expect in this board book. The pages are filled with photographs of animals that one might encounter while visiting a farm, and there is text to describe a bit about each animal. The focus is on babies. For example, kids will learn when a cow licks her calf, she cleans and comforts it. Hens lay eggs and it takes about three weeks for them to hatch. Chickens have no teeth and to help crush the grains they eat they swallow grit (very small stones). Ducklings are able to follow their mothers, including swimming with her, about as soon as they hatch. The pictures are excellent and kids will soon be spouting off this factual information to anyone in the family or around them who cares to listen. The last two pages include some challenging tasks—well beyond the youngest age level recommended for the book. This is also a good choice for kids who are older and may have difficulty managing books with thin paper pages. A companion book is entitled Savanna Animals.
