Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Farmer Joe's crops will not grow, his animals will not work, and he does not know what to do. But music tends to make everything better so he digs out his guitar and begins to play. His music draws other animals into joining his impromptu band. Fiddler Fox, Rabbit with her concertina, Bear with his double bass, and Farmer Joe with his guitar soon have everything on the farm feeling better. The crops begin growing again, the hens begin laying, and the cows are eating and dancing in the fields. The rhyming text is easy to read and quite entertaining and can be easily adapted to either a story hour scenario or used as a bedtime story. The simplicity of the text also makes it an ideal beginning reader book. The illustrations are full page and colorful and add tremendous depth to the text. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Old Farmer Joe, a lovable hound dog, knows something is amiss. The crops aren't growing, the hens can't seem to lay eggs, and even the pigs have no appetite. What's a farmer to do? "He puts on his hat and yells, 'Yee-har!'/Then he starts to pluck on his old guitar," and raises the spirits of the moping, lethargic animals with some good ole country music. As the momentum builds, Fox begins to fiddle, Rabbit plays her concertina, and Bear completes the quartet, jamming on his double bass. And before anyone can say corn on the cob, cows are grazing, bees are producing honey, and sunflowers are blooming. This charming tale, presented in rhyme, winds down with the animals enjoying a cool drink in the shade. Festive, humorous illustrations, depicting an assortment of endearing creatures with expressive features and body language, are done in ink and watercolor, using a bright palette. This is a great choice for a read-aloud or for reading one-on-one or, with a little bravery, for singing to a group of children on a hot summer day.—Anne Beier, Hendrick Hudson Free Library, Montrose, NY
Kirkus Reviews
Mitton's modest, if mildly agreeable, contribution to the barnyard-hoedown genre opens with a bad case of malaise on Farmer Joe's spread. But readers will know something's cooking, even before Farmer Joe breaks out his guitar, because Parker-Rees's palette comprises the same colors associated with the stuff that gets piped onto birthday cakes, and the barnyard animals, who strike poses of sophisticated ennui, clearly know a good time when it bites them on the knee. Out come the instruments in cumulative fashion, each inspired by the one before, and the farm gets back in operation, for music shows the way to happiness and contentment. The basic rhythm has swing-"The crops like the music. Me-oh-my! / Look at them stretching up to the sky"-and plenty of onomatopoeic oomph-"Doom-doom-doo"-though readers may wince at such clunky rhymes as "idea / cheer" and "yee-har / guitar." Ultimately the book falls short of the panache of other barnyard merriments, such as Martin Waddell's The Pig in the Pond, illustrated by Jill Barton (1992). (Picture book. 3-5)

    An Undeniably Fun Read-aloud

It may just be another picture books with animals playing the parts of people, but I'm sold on this one!Farmer Joe (a beagle-like dog) calls upon his animal friends to cheer things up around the farmyard so that the chickens can get back to the business of laying eggs and so that the crops will grow once more. The writing is marvelously, trip-off-your-tongue fun to read. In fact, it's really more of a song. It's rhythmic and lilting and my youngsters can't get enough of it. Truly, though, I don't know who has more fun when Bear appears with his string bass that goes "doom-doom-doo, whoom-whoom-whump": the reader or the listeners. The illustrations are bright, inject a lot of humor, and give my near-3-year-old twins a lot to enjoy when they "read" the book themselves. Chickens in a kick line and pigs in a do-si-do are fun for me, too.
