Clytus Rillion, the commander of a mercenary troop, embarks on a quest to cure his dying son, Sindian. Though he doubts he will survive the journey, he will pay any price to save his son’s life.

The beast, known only as Klain, born a slave and now used to entertain the masses in a bloodthirsty sport known as the Games, finds out his true value to those who own him lies with his death.

All are resigned to walk the paths fate has put them upon. Yet, is this of their own accord? I loved this book, it is refreshing to read a book where it starts you right into the story. At times I had to put the book down, and blink a couple of times to make sure I was in the real world. It immerses you with the characters and their feelings and struggles. Can't wait until book Two.

…by the end I was mesmerized so that I could not put it down till I had finished it. Drake does a good job of developing the characters and melding their paths throughout the book. The ending was a good set up for book two so I can hardly wait to see how the story continues.

The characters in “Farmers & Mercenaries” are well-developed. Their stories are told in alternating chapters, and readers easily become invested in the fate of each. The pace of the book is quick and the story lines solid. Readers will turn pages late into the night just to find out what will happen next.
With “Farmers & Mercenaries,” fans of the fantasy genre have another group of characters to get to know and love. I can't wait for the next in the series.

Meet the Author

Maxwell Alexander Drake is an award-winning Science Fiction and Fantasy author. The first novel of his Genesis of Oblivion Saga, Farmers & Mercenaries, was released in June of 2009 and won both a 2009 Moonbeam Young Adult Fantasy Award for Excellence in Literature and was named Dragon Roots Magazine’s Best New Fantasy Saga of 2009.

Book two of this saga, Mortals & Deities, was released in September 2010. Book three is scheduled for release in early summer of 2011.

His Genesis of Oblivion Saga Short, The Way of the Lion, was published in the 2010 Gen-Con author’s collection, Missing Pieces, and took their Honored Spot. This collection, as well as the Genesis of Oblivion Saga, is available worldwide in four print versions, four digital versions and two audio versions. It can be found at many fine retailers such as Barnes & Noble.

    First read of a new author.

    I found this book / author when I was visiting Gencon. After talking to the author I thought I would get it a try.

    I love the writing style of world and the character introductions. The characters are described in such a way that it paints a picture of who they are and what they look in the minds eye without distracting from the story. When you read this book it really places you in the world and makes you feel a part of it. I had a hard time putting it down once I started.

    The story itself is mostly about two brothers who find themselves on different sides of a world conflict that both believe in. This does not change who they are and they strive to remain close brothers regardless of the world events around them.

    The magic system is well thought out and is not used as a crutch like many fantasy novels.

    I would describe the writing style to be similar to Robert Jordon but missing the "fluff". I eagerly await book two and was upset when the publisher delayed its release.

    Great Beginning, Waiting for Book 2 MP3

    "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"
    Drake tells the individual stories and shows you what makes them heroes.

    A great start

    Having recently read his second book, I wanted to come back and review his first. Drake is a new author, but don't let that stop you from starting a great story. While the book does start a little slow, it really picks up after the characters are introduced & the plot starts to get rolling. You want be disappointed! Book 2 & a prequel are already out & book 3 due this summer, so plenty of material to keep you going!
