Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When you sell fruits and vegetables in the market you have to get up very early on market day. This young girl loves to go with her parents; they drive while the sky is still filled with stars and get their stall set up in the early morning hours. The shoppers come, including this little girl's best friend Carmen. After all the produce is sold, they climb back into their red truck and head home. It has been a long day and now the sun is setting and the young girl is leaning against her mother, probably asleep. An interesting slice of life set in the Southwest. The artist has based his illustrations on photographs that he took of real children at a farmer's market. Part of the "Green Light Reader" series. 2002, Harcourt,

PreS-Gr 2-Two selections for new readers. In the first, a pig has outgrown her favorite red cowgirl boots. Each of her friends offers her an alternative pair, but none is right for Beth. This silly story will amuse youngsters. Ernst's bright, movement-filled, pastel-colored illustrations fit perfectly with the quick and playful text. In the second book, a child accompanies her parents as they pack up fruits and vegetables grown on their farm and travel to sell them at an outdoor market. The simple, straightforward text is enhanced with lovely oil paintings depicting the people and market-day activities with sensitivity and warmth. Solid additions.-Lynda S.
