Children's Literature - Patrick Hunter
For those who are just beginning to learn to read; be it in English or Spanish or both, "Green Light Readers/Collecion Luz Verde" gives us a great level/nivel 2 reader. A young girl wakes up early to help her family with selling fruits and vegetables at the market. They start their long drive to the market while the stars are still shining. All during the day people come and by their fresh produce. At the end of the day, it's time to clean up and head home. The story is one of perfect simplicity; covering the day of this young Latin girl at the market which allows beginning readings to focus on the words and not get too bogged down in a plot. Additionally, in the lush watercolor illustrations you see the main girl character has a crutch that she uses to walk. This is not mentioned at all in the text, but having it in the visual aspects of the publication adds an additional layer of inclusivity. The text is black on a white background with beautiful watercolor illustrations throughout. What I really love about this reader is all the extras that are in both English and Spanish. There is an activity for creating your own market from construction paper for play-acting; information about the author, illustrator and translator; tips for reading with your child and additional titles. All of these resources are bilingual. Get this reader! It is great for young people who are bilingual or even adults who are taking ESL classes. The perfect addition to your classroom or library bookshelf, useful for those who are learning or more familiar with the language. Reviewer: Patrick Hunter
