Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With a nod to vintage 1950s-era picture books and a cuteness that borders on irony, Raschka's introduction to animal sounds offers brightly colored felt pages, silk-screened with paintings of doe-eyed farm animals. A naïf rhyme addresses each character: "Ducky Duck,/ how about a snack?/ Ducky Duck,/ now you say Quack!" A smiling pig stands in a mud puddle against a purple background: "Piggy Pig,/ boink, boink, boink./ Piggy Pig,/ now you say Oink!" The book's repeated verse, buoyant palette, and soft texture should find an enthusiastic toddler-aged audience. Ages 2–4. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Come to the farm and meet a few of the animals who live there. The first is a big black and white cow that is featured in the cover which has a die cut to reveal the first animal printed on a cloth page. Readers know it is a farm because the text welcomes them and it shows a red barn with the door wide open. Inside is a Horsey Horse which looks like it could be part of the big hair fairies and friends in some of the early readers. Young ones will learn that horses say neigh, dogs go bowwow and our friend the cow says moo. Then there is a big orange cat that can say meow and a pink pig that says oink. Are there more farmyard friends? Yes, a yellow duck and snowy white sheep that also make sounds of their own. The last spread shows them all looking out of a window in the barn. The book can be used to learn the names of animals and the sounds that they make as well as the colors that can be associated with them. The barn windows are different shapes but that might be a bit too advanced for the intended audience.

…the kind of text that barely-talking toddlers will enthusiastically moo, oink and bark along to. Raschka's drawings add a rare note of artistry to the medium…
