Overview

Clothes define people. A person's clothing, whether it's a sari, kimono, or business suit, is an essential key to his or her culture, class, personality, or even religion. The Kyoto Costume Institute recognizes the importance of understanding clothing sociologically, historically, and artistically. Founded in 1978, the KCI holds one of the world's most extensive clothing collections and has curated many exhibitions worldwide. With an emphasis on Western women's clothing, the KCI has amassed a wide range of historical garments, underwear, shoes, and fashion accessories dating from the 18th century to the present day. Showcasing a vast selection of skilled photographs from the Institute's archives, depicting the clothing expertly displayed and arranged on custom-made mannequins, Fashion is a fascinating excursion through the last three centuries of clothing trends.

From a rare treasure such as a 17th century iron corset with embroidered bodice to modern-day outfits by such designers as Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein, the collection provides an extensive overview of the evolution of women's fashion. The KCI believes that "clothing is an essential manifestation of our very being" and their passion and dedication positively radiate from every page of this book. It offers an opportunity to see how our ancestors dressed, to consider the amazing accomplishments of contemporary fashion, and to imagine how our descendants may dress in the distant future as clothing design continues on its tireless evolutionary path.

This is a fabulous book, great for a gift or for research.

I was elated to find such a beautifully done book on fashion covering the 18th to the 20th century. It is a fabulous visual resource for anyone in fashion design, drama/theatre, or history.

    Gorgeous

I am a history major with a special interest in clothing and textile. I found this book to be a great read. There was lots of information about changes in clothing style and textile making. Even if this is not you cup of tea, the book is worth a look purely for the amazing photos of the Kyoto Institute's collection.

    Wonderful inspiration!

This book is chock-full of photos not only of entire garments, but also close up views of the details that make the clothes special. I've only had the book a little while and already I've dozens of wonderful ideas for improving my sewing projects.

    A beautiful fashion history resource!

I'm not what you'd call a fashionista, but I am interested in history, specifically the aspects of history that focus on how people lived: what they ate, how they slept, what they wore. So as soon as I saw this book, I knew I'd be adding it to my library. The explanations of fashion are clear and concise, elaborating on how and why it changed from period to period. And the images are amazing! Full-length photos of dresses and frockcoats, evening capes and body stockings trace fashion from the 18th to the 20th century. And accompanying these are details of stomachers and gloves, lace mitts and muffs, embroidery, buttons, hats, and bustles, purses, shoes, fans, and more. This book is an amazing resource, whether you're interested in the fashion or the history or both!

    History

For people who like fashion or the history of fashion, this is a great book to have. I had bought it for the history and to see the creativity of some of the best designers in the world. The images are beautiful, and I like the explanations that come with the garments. I did notice that there were some blurry text, but otherwise, the book is a great buy for me. It is informative and good research material of historical and avant-garde fashion.

Wonderful Book For Western Fashion Reference and Inspiration

This book has page after page of beautiful color photos of exquisitely beautiful fashions. Marvelous detail photos of fabrics, undergarments, shoes and accessories. Wonderful prints of artwork containing garments of similar design adjacent to the corresponding garment's photograph. The contemporary fashions are also exciting and inspiring. I own a collection of fashion books for reference, this is by far the best. I am thrilled to own this book.

    A really great gift

I loved buying this gift for my teen daughter. Items of beauty are something that young women can really appreciate. We've spent several great hours pouring over the book together and discussing the meaning of the clothing in their historic context. I've also found my daughter just looking at the book on her own. It's gorgeous and gives great cultural context, both as an example of costume history, but as an example of the influence of the west and the east on each other's culture.

Excellent book! Beautiful and a great gift!

If you've ever read a historical book (fiction or nonfiction) and wondered exactly what the wealthy characters are wearing instead of relying on an author's description, this is the book for you. It's also a wonderful book since it highlights the design of each piece. Most pages are full size photos beautifully lighted. This book does not have tons of written information on each piece but that also makes it a great coffee table book. Nicely done!
