Fashion Theory takes as its starting point a definition of 'fashion' as the cultural construction of the embodied identity. It provides an international and interdisciplinary forum for the rigorous analysis of cultural phenomena ranging from foot-binding to fashion advertising. The first two issues of 1999 feature articles on women and the veil by Fadwa El Guindi of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Southern California, female tattooing by Michael Hardin from the University of Houston, and Elsa Schiaparelli by Caroline Evans from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London.
