Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young readers will learn about the concepts of fast and slow by comparing different animals in this clearly written and simply worded picture book. Part of the "Animal Opposites" series, this nonfiction text uses full-color photographs of animals to let readers see and read for themselves the differences in speed using various animals as examples. Readers can compare the differences between falcons, the world's fastest bird, and the very slow snail, or gibbons that swing quickly through trees and lorises that creep slowly from branch to branch. Simple animal facts are also worked in throughout the text, informing readers that a sloth sleeps while hanging upside down, and that Gila monsters are one of only two types of venomous lizards. Included at the end of the book is a "Did You Know?" section, a glossary, and references for more information. Bright colors are used to set off the animal photos and the text, making this book both visually and educationally enjoyable for young animal enthusiasts. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 7.
