Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Hari Kumar, M.D.(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This 14th volume in the annually published Fast Facts series brings together a variety of experts to provide the latest updates in vascular and endovascular surgery.
Purpose: The book serves as a brief summary of the latest trends and evolving philosophies on selected topics in vascular disease.
Audience: Vascular interventionalists and medical practitioners who encounter patients with vascular disease are the intended audience. The editor presents a multitude of diverse topics to engage the interest of these readers.
Features: The book covers 11 topics including superficial vein occlusion, a new fenestrated stent graft device, surveillance after EVAR, proximal internal carotid artery stenosis, changes to the TASC recommendations, management of iliofemoral DVT, vascular entrapment in sports, the diabetic ischemic foot, pedal bypass, aortic dissection, and shortening operative time during total arch replacement. Chapters are authored by respected physicians from Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia, providing diverse perspectives of the field. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction of the current state of the field and then swiftly proceeds to distill the latest research and debates in an easily readable format. For those looking for a quick snapshot of the topic, each section contains a colorful table with highlights of "what's in," "what's out," "what's new," and "what's controversial." Those wanting more can seek out the numerous references provided at the end of each section.
Assessment: Not intended as an exhaustive review of vascular medicine, this annual publication instead serves as a supplement to comprehensive textbooks or journals. Experienced practitioners will find the suggestions and updates potentially useful and thought-provoking. Newcomers will gain an understanding of the direction of the field. In a specialty filled with rapid advances in treatments, this book offers the latest expert opinions.
