About the Author

Eden Zabat Kan, PhD, RN, is Assistant Professor, Nursing Department, Health Sciences Division, The College of Southern Maryland, where she is responsible for didactic and clinical instruction for first semester students. Dr. Kan received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Penn State University at State College, PA., her master's degree in nursing education from Villanova University, Villanova, PA, and her doctorate in nursing science from Widener University, Chester, PA.

Description: This book, which describes methods clinical instructors can use with beginning nursing students, includes the fundamental elements of teaching and pitfalls to avoid. Originally published in 2013, this edition has two relevant new chapters.
Purpose: The purpose is to offer a complementary guide for nurses transitioning from clinical practice to educator. The book meets its objectives by offering information on developing a new identity as a clinical nursing instructor. The book presents brief fast facts and scenarios with outcomes related to situations that can arise in the classroom for the educator who has no idea how to handle the situation.
Audience: The intended audience is current and aspiring clinical nursing instructors. It is a guide for nursing instructors in how to maneuver the roles played by different team leaders and players in educating new nurses. The authors are experienced clinical instructors who command both academic and clinical knowledge of the nursing field from years of teaching nursing. They present expert topics on how to lead and teach nursing.
Features: The authors use scenarios, exhibits, and case studies throughout the 21 chapters to assist instructors with classroom problem solving. Chapter 3 is a notable because it details the different roles clinical instructors take on, based on the type of patient. Some chapters have a few references; some chapters have none. The book also includes appendixes.
Assessment: This is a concise book for nursing instructors that describes what they can expect to experience in clinical sites and how they can lead and motivate students as they become nurses. The book lacks color or graphics that would be quick tools for instructors, versus just text. Clinical instructors cannot rely on this book as a comprehensive guide to teaching instruction, but can use it as a quick reference. It is however, valuable to novice instructors who want a quick, concise read.
