Overview

Joe Cross found himself, at age 40, weighing a whopping 300 plus pounds, and on a daily diet of the steroid Prednisone to manage the painful autoimmune condition that was making his life miserable. He decided to make a major change, so he did something radical: he decided to embark on a sixty-day "Reboot" to give his body a chance to detoxify and heal itself. For two straight months, he drank only fresh fruit and vegetable juices - no solid food of any kind, no soda, no coffee, no alcohol. He decided to turn his Reboot into a journey across the U.S. and bring a film crew along to capture him talking with the people he met along the way, sharing his experience (and his juice). He made a hugely inspirational film about the experience, also called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This book details his journey.

Includes foreword by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. and afterword by Dean Ornish, M.D.

Good book for those who want to change their lifestyle of eating

I started reading this book before one of my sisters insisted that I watch the movie. I have to say that the two run pretty much parallel to each other for the most part; however, there is a lot of great information at the end of the book that you don't get from the movie. Sure, this guy's method may seem strange and possibly unhealthy and perhaps unattainable and unsustainable, but anyone who is overweight and has either tried fad diets and/or read about nutrition knows that what he says makes sense. I think it's inspiring that you get to not only see his transformation, but the transformation of the person he met in his journey who ultimately sought his help. As I mentioned, the end of the book has some really good information - about changing your diet, recipes for juicing, tips on fasting and other reading.

I recommend this book to those who have struggled with their weight and diet, regardless of age. I found the plan to be very doable, especially if you have the right mindset. I also recommend watching the movie. The book doesn't have many photos, and it makes a difference to actually see how this guy's body changes.
