Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Jake strolls through the aisles of the Houston Livestock Show, kicking up sawdust. As he is leaving, the boy accidentally unlatches the gate causing the animals to get loose. Soon there is a rumble and a storm of animals. The heifers stampede while the chickens peck every kernel of popcorn. Pandemonium follows, as the rodeo spectators leave the stadium. Jake finds himself on the hot seat, as a livestock judge accuses him of ruining the event. Jake realizes he has to do something quickly, so he disguises himself as a giant Texas rattlesnake and bares his fangs, causing the animals to get scared and return to their pens and the show to continue. Jake sheds the costume and catches up with his parents. In this rollicking Western tale, young readers will discover the pleasures of a rodeo show while being enchanted by lively illustrations. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

K-Gr 3- Young Jake creates havoc at the rodeo by accidentally opening the gates on the livestock pens. A herd of heifers, chickens, horses, pigs, etc., then take over the show area. There are "calves on carousels, rabbits on roller coasters, pigs on paddleboats!" Jake rectifies his mistake by disguising himself as a rattlesnake and scares the animals back into their pens, saving the day for the "FFA and 4-H folks" who were hoping to win scholarships. Although the topic of this tall tale is rather unique, the text and illustrations are pedestrian. Jake's Texas rattler getup is pretty unbelievable: he wraps himself in a burlap sack and uses a baby rattle on his tail (the pictures do not make clear how it is attached). Most libraries can skip this one.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
