    Narciso Lopez, a soldier of values

    Narciso Lopez unfairly regarded as a Southener´s mercenary. The author opens another and clearer view. I can add that Lopez was a brave royalist cavalry officer that defended the King´s flag during Venezuelan independence (1811-1823)Once, for instance, in the tropical plains, a young officer asked his carabiniers to set on foot and resist Paez´s lancers charge. Thoug it was impossible to stop such a fierce dusty cloud of valiant horsemen, his firm voice repeadtdly ordered 'Steady, Carabineros, fire' That was Narciso Lopez, born in Venezuela, killed in Cuba under the cruel 'Garrote vil' method. After Venezuela´s war, he stayed in Spain and fought in the Civil 'Carlista' war as a liberal. The former royalist had changed his mind and then was able to assume an old Bolivar´s dream: free Cuba and Portorico from Spanish rule, although it happened decades later in a very different geo-political enviroment.
