Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson
This touching book is the story of a young child (from a bear family) looking for the perfect gift to give his father for Father's Day. While searching for his gift, he asks his older siblings for advice and hears the reasons behind the gifts they give him. During the day, the father makes breakfast, fixes a bicycle tire, and even helps with a scraped knee. The end of the book is a surprise because of what the child decides to get for his father. The illustrations are rich with color and design. The graphics are also quite clever, with several things only adults will understand. For example, the shirt the father bear is wearing has a honey bee design. This is the perfect book to have around the house for Father's Day. Children reading this book will grasp the concept of giving their father a gift he will enjoy for that special day.

Harvey's three siblings have firm ideas of what constitutes perfect gifts for their dad (after all, they give him the same things every year and he responds with, "I can always use more…"). The poor little cub is clueless, but then he comes up with the best gift of all—drawings that show all of the meaningful ways that his father has helped and supported him. This focus on innocence creates an underlying message that may be too sophisticated for preschool audiences without discussion. The father is shown as a loving, sensible man who appreciates every attempt that his children make to please him. The illustrations are bright and expressive, and the rooms in the bears' cozy house are filled with homey details. An endearing story that will charm readers.

Kirkus Reviews
Harvey is confounded when it comes to figuring out what his Dad would like for Father's Day. His siblings give ties, golf balls and nails every year, and Dad always says, "Thank you. I could always use another. . . ." While Harvey wrestles with the dilemma of finding something original to give, he calls on his Dad for help throughout his busy day-patching up a cut leg, pumping up a bicycle tire, drying off after a bath. After a wonderful bedtime story, Harvey realizes that a "thank you" would be the perfect gift. His card shows his Dad exactly what he loves and appreciates most about him, and elicits a "You're welcome" in return. Ember's anthropomorphized bear family displays a wide range of emotions, and their surroundings will be comforting and familiar to almost any reader. Best of all, Nolan and Ember have managed to highlight Harvey's gift while at the same time not belittling the gifts of the other children. A warm sentiment to share with any child shopping for Father's Day. (Picture book. 4-8)

Read it over and over again.

My 2 year-old loves this book and requests it every night. Best read with different voices for each character like my husband does! Good repitition of manners "Thank you" and "You're welcome." Harvey, the youngest sibling, finds his own way to express love to his dad on Father's Day.
