Overview

What would you do if your four-year-old son was abducted—by your spouse?

In June 2004, David Goldman took his Brazilian wife, Bruna, and their son, Sean, to the airport. She told him that they would be returning to New Jersey after a two-week vacation. Once there, however, Bruna informed Goldman that she was staying in Brazil—and keeping Sean.

In the courts, Goldman found himself outmaneuvered by the legal machinations of Bruna’s new husband, a member of one of Brazil’s most powerful families. But Goldman never gave up, appealing to the media and the highest levels of the U.S. government for help. A Father’s Love is the story of Goldman’s incredible five-year battle to reunite with his abducted child – and an inspiring celebration of an ordinary man’s love for his son.

Kirkus Reviews

With the assistance of veteran co-author Abraham (Billy: The Untold Story of a Young Billy Graham and the Test of Faith that Almost Changed Everything, 2008, etc.), Goldman tells the story of his six-year battle to regain custody of his son Sean.

While working in Milan in 1997, the author met his future wife Bruna. Although she was Brazilian, they decided to marry and make their home in the New Jersey beach community where he was raised. Sean was born in 2000. In 2004, Bruna and Sean traveled to Brazil to visit her parents. Goldman planned to join them in a week, but four days after her departure, she phoned to inform him that she was leaving him and demanded sole custody of their son. The author writes that Bruna threatened him and pressured him to sign legal documents granting her custody. Seeking legal advice, he learned that this was not just a custody case. According to the Hague Convention, which had been ratified by both the United States and Brazilian, his wife had kidnapped their son. Despite the fact that U.S. courts ordered the immediate return of the Sean to the United States—where a custody hearing would be held in accordance with the Convention—Goldman was thwarted continually by the Brazilian judicial system. In 2008, having no other recourse, Goldman decided to seek publicity for his case. Featured on NBC, he attracted the attention of New Jersey Representative Chris Smith, who became a determined advocate on his behalf and enlisted support from fellow congressmen, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama. Sean became a poster child for thousands of other abducted children, and finally, in December 2009, he was released to the custody of his father.

A riveting tale of an unusual abduction and a father's determination to regain rightful custody of his son.

    highly recommended

If you are not familiar with this story, this is a must read. Even if you are I highly recommend it. I know the story and was still riveted to the book. You will not believe the impossible odds that David had against him and still he perservered until he won the battle. He is a father to be admired and a model of what a father should be. This book also brings to light the terrible tragedy that is going on and the heartbreak of thousands of parents like David. It will bring tears to your eyes and joy when they are reunited. You won't be disappointed!

An emotional and highly recommended read!

David Goldman has written a factual yet emotional account of what he and Sean went through beginning in June 2004. This is not about a custody battle, this is about a child who was illegally abducted and retained in Brazil for more than five years, and kept from his father and paternal relatives. The injustice of Sean's retention and the disgust with which David was treated by a well connected and wealthy Brazilian family is detailed to the extent that I wept for what they both endured. David takes you behind-the-scenes, to everything he felt and suffered while doing everything humanly possible to have his son returned to him. Sean is now a happy, healthy and well adapted boy who is most definitely home where he belongs. This was a great read!

Highly Recommended - a MUST read!

This book will open the eyes of many who are unfamiliar with International Parental Abduction and the horrific effects that such a selfish act has on the child/children and the Left Behind Parent. When enough people realize that this is not a 'personal custody' issue but an issue that requires the attention of our government at high levels, perhaps other Left Behind Parents will gain the much needed assistance to be reunited with their children. Keep a box of Kleenex nearby - David's relentless quest to be reunited with his son will take you through a myriad of emotions.

    Highly recommended - Great Book!

This a must read for all. This book gives an account of the pain and grief all Left Behind Parents go through. In David's story even though his ending is happy, we must not forget other parents who are still going through the pain described by David.

    Great book!!!

This book was awesome- I couldn't put it down!! I had followed this story from David's first interview with Meredith Viera to the follow-up special with her a few weeks ago. It's unbelievable what this father unjustly endured to ensure the rightful return of his son. Knowing how many others are in his position, most of which will not likely have this outcome, is absolutely heart-breaking.

This is the true story of David Goldman's love for his only child, Sean, and of the great lengths he went to get his abducted son returned to him. It is a story of a Father's love, his faith, his trust that in doing things the legal way/ working though the proper channels, he would get his son returned to him. It is the story of a "David fighting Goliath," and just like the biblical version, David wins! This book takes the reader through the agonizing years and hard work, as well as the self discipline, it took to work within the law to regain custody of a son who was abducted by his mother to Brazil. It is truly the story of "A Father's Love."

    MUST READ

This book is one of the best of I have ever read! I loved every minute of it. I read it in less than 48 hours and would have read it quicker if it wasn't for life getting in the way!!! David Goldman is a victor in every way! He never gave up and I commend him to the fullest for not giving up, even when it seemed so hopeless. He is proving that he is the better parent and Sean will have a much better life with him than in the negative and nasty enviroment he was in. So sad that people can be that way. Way to go David! God bless you and Sean! Thank you for telling us your story.

    Could NOT put it down!

Very well written, keeps your attention through and through. David Goldman is the most driven person I think I have ever run across. He was put in the worst possible position and I am so happy he and Sean have come through this to be father and son as they should be. Blessings to the Goldman family.
