Description: The book summarizes current knowledge on muscle fatigue, its nature and mechanisms, with special emphasis on systemic integration, particularly in cardiorespiratory system. Most of the material was presented at International Symposium on Neural and Neuromuscular Aspects of Muscular Fatigue in Miami in November 1994.
Purpose: The editors put their objective in providing a systematic review of various topics on neurobiology of muscular fatigue and building a reference text in this fast developing area. In view of the growing interest to this area of neuroscience, preparation of such a summary book is certainly timely and valuable. The editors made the book complete, useful, and readable.
Audience: Although the editors direct their book to practicing healthcare professionals, teaching faculty, and biomedical trainees, the book will be more interesting to neurobiologists, neurophysiologists and other neuroscientists, and to lesser degree practicing physicians and surgeons. Authors of the book are the participants of the Miami symposium — scientists from 12 different countries of Europe, North America, and Australia.
Features: The book has many black and white illustrations, mainly graphs and schemes; it has a good set of pertinent references at the end of each chapter; and the index at the end of the book is helpful in finding necessary information. The introduction to each of the nine sections summarizes the contents of the following chapters and gives an overview of the section's subject. The book starts with a tribute to Dr. Bigland-Ritchie, one of the pioneers and most active researchers of the field. The epilogue provides an overview and future directions of the subject.
Assessment: This book is a cornerstone of the newly developing field of neuroresearch, dealing with various aspects of fatigue based on latest scientific data. This comprehensive topic review will be helpful for neuroscientists and biologists interested in studying fatigue, its basis and mechanisms. The book also deserves to be placed in any medical and biological library.
