In centennial celebration of William Faulkner's birth, a photographic record of the land his fiction turned into legend

Faulkner's reception has been mixed over the past century. In 1946, when Malcolm Cowley published The Portable Faulkner, none of the Southerner's work was in print. In centennial celebration of William Faulkner's birth, a photographic record of the land his fiction turned into legend

Faulkner's reception has been mixed over the past century. In 1946, when Malcolm Cowley published The Portable Faulkner, none of the Southerner's work was in print. Since then he has been canonized, so to speak, the subject of infinite college courses, a modern icon. Given his status-and publishing's love of anniversaries of all sorts-there's surprisingly little hoopla surrounding the centennial of his birth on September 25th, 1997. The most accessible book by far is coming from (no surprise here) the University Press of Mississippi. Called Faulkner's World, it is photographer Martin J. Dain's 100 duotone images of the landscape Faulkner memorialized as Yoknapatawpha, with a foreword by Larry Brown and an introduction by Tom Rankin.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This collection of b&w photographs focuses on William Faulkner's homeland, which his fiction transformed into Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. Dain photographed Faulkner country during the last two years of the author's life (1961-62). Many of his photographs first appeared in (1964). The new book, published in celebration of Faulkner's centenary, includes many photographs that were not in that earlier book. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
