Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
At first glance, these two British books are very similar and include much of the same content, but each has a slightly different agenda. Neither is designed as an encyclopedic source of information about individual species, yet both (especially the Hart-Davis) are lavishly illustrated with a combination of color and black-and-white photographs. Noted naturalists, the two authors share similar backgrounds, with roots in the British countryside. Buczacki, who is also a well-known plant expert, considers all the wild animals in the British Isles, both living and extinct, from small to large, but excludes mythical beasts. He emphasizes the role of wildlife in British cultural history and outlines the influence of wildlife on the customs, beliefs, and folklore of the British. The book is divided according to the classification of animals-invertebrates, reptiles, birds, and so on-featuring more than 3000 entries that range in length from a single paragraph to several pages. The longer ones are devoted to animals that have a larger presence in folklore and legend, such as the tortoise and the fox. Unlike Buczacki, Hart-Davis surveys domesticated as well as wild animals, selecting those creatures that people are most likely to come in contact with or to read about. He focuses on the consequences of the human exploitation of animals and emphasizes how much attitudes toward animals have changed over the last 50 years. The text is organized into such categories as wild animals, domesticated animals, exotic animals, and farm animals; an entire section is devoted to the horse alone. Entries vary in length from a brief paragraph to a page or more. Both books are well written and beautifully illustrated, and each serves its stated purpose well. Because Hart-Davis includes more information about the physical description and living habits of each species, his might be a better choice for natural history collections, while Buczacki's title, with its emphasis on the animal's place in culture, legend, and folklore, would be a good addition to folklore collections. Both books are recommended for public and academic libraries where there is an interest in British wildlife.-Deborah Emerson, Rochester Regional Lib.
