Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Among this abundance of funny poems, serious poems, story poems, poetic prose from the Bible, parents will find almost all those they want to share with their children. It makes a fat, generous, attractive book.”—Christian Science Monitor

“If your children don’t like poetry, expose them to this collection . . . and I defy them to resist its magic.”—Kirkus Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
This collection of over 700 poems contains selections from Robert Louis Stevenson, William Shakespeare, and Langston Hughes, to name but a few. The chapter headings include those that will appeal to young readers as well as some that will appeal to older readers. From "It's Fun to Play" to "Sign of my Nation, Great and Strong" the selections include old favorites as well as newer poems that will become the favorites of future generations. Line drawings by Leonard Weisgard at the beginning of each chapter convey the feeling of the poems within. In the introduction, Ms. Ferris explains how she learned to love poetry as a child growing up in Nebraska and later in Wisconsin because her parents made sure that poetry was part of the family life. The selections reflect broad interests and geographic diversity and will enchant or inspire readers of all ages. There is an author index, a title index, and a first line index, all useful in a collection such as this one. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
